Retail Pharmacy Technician (Part-Time)

Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician assists in preparing and dispensing medications, managing inventory, processing prescriptions, and providing outstanding customer service to patients and healthcare staff.

Position Summary
The Retail Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in the preparation, dispensing, and billing of prescription medications and pharmaceutical supplies in accordance with state and federal regulations. This position supports efficient pharmacy operations by maintaining inventory, processing prescriptions, assisting customers, and ensuring a safe, organized, and compliant work environment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Prepare the pharmacy for daily operations.
- Provide exceptional customer service to patients, visitors, and healthcare staff.
- Enter prescription information accurately into the pharmacy computer system.
- Prepare and fill prescriptions under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
- Process customer transactions and collect payments accurately.
- Offer patients the opportunity to speak with the pharmacist regarding medication counseling.
- Receive, check, stock, and organize medication deliveries.
- Monitor inventory levels and assist with ordering medications and pharmacy supplies.
- Complete daily audits, controlled substance audits, charge posting reports, and daily deposits.
- Remove expired medications and process returns according to pharmacy procedures.
- Fill medication and stock requisitions for hospital departments.
- Assist with quality improvement initiatives and departmental performance metrics.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe pharmacy environment.
- Protect patient confidentiality and comply with all HIPAA regulations.
- Assist the Pharmacy Manager with implementing new pharmacy programs and process improvements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician registration or eligibility to obtain registration upon hire (if required).
- Familiarity with medical terminology required.
- Basic computer proficiency required.
- Strong mathematical and clerical skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated punctuality, dependability, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative healthcare team.
Physical Requirements

- Constantly (67–100% of the time): Standing, walking, talking, hearing, near visual acuity, and use of hands and fingers for prescription preparation, computer work, and medication handling.
- Frequently (34–66% of the time): Reaching, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, repetitive hand and wrist movements, and handling pharmacy inventory.
- Occasionally (11–33% of the time): Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Rarely (Less than 10% of the time): Climbing ladders or working at heights.
Additional physical requirements include:
- Ability to perform detailed work requiring close visual attention, including reading medication labels, prescriptions, and computer screens.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, pharmacists, healthcare providers, and coworkers.
- Ability to remain on your feet for extended periods during the workday.
