Job Summary: The Volunteer Program Coordinator is responsible for coordination of patient care volunteers to meet patient and family needs of NorthStar Care Community (NSCC).
Essential Functions:
1. Works with Manager, Volunteer Program to identify and recruit patient care volunteers.
2. Arranges for volunteers for every appropriate patient; ensures volunteer activities are provided in
accordance with the plan of care and that all volunteer interactions are documented in the patient
record.
3. Contacts patients and families as needed and develops and updates documents.
4. Maintains volunteer plan of care in electronic health record.
5. Reviews volunteer documentation for appropriateness, clarity; reinforces confidentiality.
6. Ensures all volunteer standards comply with State and Federal regulations.
7. Participates in quality improvement initiatives.
8. Evaluates the effectiveness, quantity and quality of services provided by volunteers. Consults
frequently with Clinical Operations team members to ensure appropriate utilization of volunteers as
needed for patient/family, team and organization satisfaction. Ensures volunteer hours meet or
exceed five percent (5%) of the total hours of patient care provided by paid staff.
9. May participate in interdisciplinary group (IDG) meetings and conferences if asked and when
appropriate, to identify and collaborate on volunteer opportunities.
10. Provides avenues for volunteer support, communication and recognition via newsletters, scheduled
meetings, telephone calls, etc. and fosters a sense of community and belonging.
11. Actively participates in meetings at the individual, group and organizational levels, both within and
external to the organization, to achieve desired outcomes.
12. Projects future needs through ongoing assessments and develops plans to meet those needs.
13. Screens, orients, trains, supervises, evaluates and supports volunteers and is responsible for
appropriate placement.
14. Provides educational programs for volunteers annually. Assists with annual volunteer competency
development and implementation.
15. Responsible for the utilization and retention of volunteers.
16. Maintains accurate records of volunteer information.
17. Ensures volunteers adhere to organizational policies and procedures, managing any potential risks
associated with volunteer assignments.
18. Adjusts to changes in workload and schedules based on changing departmental and organizational
priorities.
19. Acts as liaison between NorthStar Care Community, community and other hospice programs.
20. Adheres to the organizational Code of Conduct, policies and procedures, protocols and processes
and all regulatory and legal requirements.
21. Adheres to NorthStar standards to care for every person, every time, 100% of the time.
Marginal Functions: Performs other related duties as assigned.
Supervision: Reports to the Manager, Volunteer Program or designee; close working relationship with Director; supervises patient care volunteers.
Working Relationships:
Internal: Close relationship with the interdisciplinary team and volunteers. Occasional contact with
administrative and support departments.
External: Occasional contact with other agencies, facilities and community programs.
Qualifications:
1. Associate’s degree required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
2. Two (2) to five (5) years’ work experience with increasing level of responsibility required.
3. Previous experience in training, coordinating and scheduling paid or unpaid staff preferred. Work
experience in a healthcare and/or hospice setting preferred.
4. Ability to effectively communicate in both internal and external relationships.
5. Demonstrated experience in public speaking.
6. Demonstrated knowledge of community resources related community outreach and volunteer
services.
7. Demonstrated ability to work independently while functioning as part of a cooperative and coordinated
team.
8. Ability to use technology (hardware and software) NorthStar Care Community requires.
9. Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, sound judgment, effective organizational, prioritization
and follow-through skills, attention to detail, tact, dependability, emotional intelligence and the ability
to promote positive, constructive relationships with communication and collaboration at all levels with
the ability to maintain confidentiality
10. The physical demands of the position include: vision, effective speech and hearing for extensive
telephone contact; repetitive motion; traveling; driving or riding in motor vehicle; standing, sitting,
walking, bending, reaching, and stretching; lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds unassisted.
11. Proof of current tuberculin testing required; will not be allowed patient contact until tuberculin clearance
is documented.
12. Must have reliable transportation.
13. Must be eligible to work in the United States.
