WIC is a nationally recognized nutrition program that effectively improves access to nutritious foods and promotes healthier lifestyles. The Indiana WIC Program provides services to an average of 145,000 women, infants, and children monthly through a network of 140 WIC clinics in Indiana. Indiana WIC also supports $105 million in food sales at over 600 WIC-authorized grocery stores and pharmacies throughout Indiana. IHC Lawrence County WIC in Bedford is now recruiting for a part-time WIC Competent Professional Authority (WIC Nutritionist) to join our team. IHC welcomes current Registered Dieticians or Nutritionists, BSNs, or deemed WIC Nutritionists-eligible per IDOH to apply for this role.
This is a part-time position scheduled 16 hours per week.
The WIC Nutritionist completes dietary and health habits assessments and provides education that will promote health in mothers and children. They work with other WIC staff to improve the nutrition and health of WIC clients, their families, and the public at large. The Nutritionist also promotes breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding by both educating and supporting WIC participants, their families, and the public at large.

Clinic Hours of Operation:
Monday - 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Tuesday - 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday - 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Thursday - CLOSED
Friday - 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Role responsibilities include:
- Performing anthropometric and biochemical measurements.
- Making nutritional assessments.
- Developing and documenting customized care plans, and required documentation within the electronic WIC records.
- Providing referrals, scheduling appointments, and issuing food packages.
- Planning, implementing and evaluating the nutrition education component of the local WIC program.
- Assisting with planning, implementation and coordination the conduct of WIC operations.
- Providing nutrition education to high-risk patients and promotes breastfeeding as the preferred method of infant feeding.
- Assisting with public relations between the WIC program and the community.
- Preparing, maintaining, and reviewing electronic and paper WIC records and reports for timeliness and accuracy.
- Providing back-up supervision when Site Supervisor is not available or has been appointed by WIC Site Supervisor.
Required skills:
- Effectively communicate ideas with a wide range of educational levels, verbally and in writing, in both one-on-one and group settings.
- Maintain working relationships with WIC staff and clients, community groups and hospitals.
- Resolve conflicts, think creatively and negotiate solutions.
- Demonstrate knowledge of food composition, normal nutrition, nutritional risks and their implications for health, along with lifestyle choices that impact overall health.
- Proactively promote WIC and IHC services through public relations and community contacts.
- Apply knowledge of food composition, normal nutrition, nutritional risks and their implications for health, along with lifestyle choices that impact overall health.
- Demonstrate knowledge of cultural and ethnic food, nutrition, and health practices.
- Prepare and maintain accurate and up-to-date WIC records, both paper and electronic.
- Juggle multiple requests and meet multiple deadlines.
- Maintain participant confidentiality.
- Counsel with emotional based technique required by ISDH.
- Perform duties of a WIC clerk when necessary.
- Analyze workflow and implement process improvements where necessary.
- Design, initiate, and/or participate in process improvement projects.
- Current Registered Dietician or Nutritionist, BSN, or deemed WIC Nutritionist-eligible per IDOH
- One year of previous work experience with WIC and/or nutritional counseling preferred
- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) preferred
