Director, Proto Lab & Innovation
This role is focused on building and leading RWOB's next-generation prototype and innovation capability. As Director, Proto Lab & Innovation, you will transform ideas into tangible experiences by connecting creative thinking with rapid prototyping, fabrication, engineering, and manufacturing.
Working closely with Design, Engineering, Production, and Business Development, this role bridges imagination with execution—accelerating how concepts move from sketches and renderings into physical prototypes that inspire clients, validate ideas, and ultimately win business.
This position is responsible for building not only a world-class prototype lab, but also the culture, people, and processes that make innovation repeatable across RWOB.

To build RWOB's premier prototype and innovation lab, transforming great ideas into physical experiences that accelerate decision-making, inspire clients, improve manufacturing outcomes, and position RWOB as the industry's most agile retail design partner.

Role Breakdown
1. Lead the Proto Lab
Build and lead RWOB's rapid prototyping capability.
- Establish shop standards, workflows, and operating procedures.
- Build an efficient and safe fabrication environment.
- Develop prototype best practices across all client programs.
- Introduce new equipment, technologies, and fabrication methods.
- Create an environment centered on experimentation and learning.
2. Connect Design, Engineering & Manufacturing
Become the bridge between concept and production.
- Partner with Design during early concept development.
- Collaborate with Engineering to ensure manufacturability.
- Support Production with prototype validation.
- Reduce risk through rapid iteration.
- Improve speed from concept to production-ready solutions.
3. Drive Innovation
Bring new ideas, technologies, and materials into the organization.
- Research emerging fabrication technologies.
- Explore new materials and manufacturing techniques.
- Build client demonstrations and innovation showcases.
- Lead prototype development for new business opportunities.
- Support speculative design and future retail concepts.
4. Build the Pittsburgh Proto Lab
Create the long-term roadmap for RWOB's innovation capabilities.
- Develop the equipment roadmap.
- Recommend future investments.
- Design shop layout and workflow.
- Standardize fabrication processes.
- Implement inventory and material management.
- Establish maintenance and operational procedures.
5. Build and Develop the Team
Recruit and mentor the next generation of makers.
- Hire prototype specialists.
- Develop fabrication talent.
- Cross-train designers and engineers.
- Foster craftsmanship and accountability.
