Registered Nurse (RN) Job Description
Position Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) provides nursing care in a multidisciplinary behavioral health setting, including assessment, medication management, detox monitoring, care coordination, patient education, and crisis intervention. The RN delivers safe, appropriate care in compliance with California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) regulations, licensing standards, physician orders, and Integrated Behavioral Health Group policies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct nursing and medical assessments for admissions and ongoing patient care.
- Review admission appropriateness with medical and psychiatric providers.
- Complete admission documentation, medication reconciliation, and physician orders.
- Administer medications and treatments as ordered and document patient response per policy and regulations.
- Monitor detox patients, including CIWA/COWS assessments, withdrawal symptoms, and medical complications.
- Maintain medication storage, inventory, narcotic counts, and administration records in compliance with policy and regulations.
- Perform nursing procedures such as vital signs, first aid, blood draws, specimen collection, and basic health assessments.
- Assess and respond to psychiatric, behavioral, and medical emergencies, including suicide risk and danger to self or others.
- Collaborate with physicians, psychiatrists, therapists, and the treatment team to support individualized care and continuity.
- Provide patient and family education on medications, treatment, recovery, and discharge planning.
- Coordinate medical appointments, referrals, prior authorizations, and follow-up care.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and objective clinical documentation.
- Ensure informed consent for medications and treatment is obtained and documented.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and stocked nursing station and medication room.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and quality improvement activities.
- Perform other duties within the scope of licensure as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Licensure
- Current, unrestricted California RN license required.
- ADN required; BSN preferred.
- Current CPR/BLS certification required.
Experience
- At least one year of nursing experience preferred in behavioral health, substance use treatment, detoxification, psychiatric care, or a related setting.
- Experience with withdrawal management and detox protocols preferred.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy and medication administration required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of behavioral health, substance use disorders, withdrawal management, and trauma-informed care.
- Knowledge of DHCS regulations, HIPAA, medication administration standards, and infection control.
- Ability to assess medical and psychiatric stability and respond effectively in crises.
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, and documentation skills.
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
