J Davis Construction is now seeking a dynamic and results-driven Director of Business Development. The Director of Business Development is responsible for creating, executing, and managing J. Davis Construction’s business development strategy across all targeted markets. This role provides strategic direction, leadership, accountability, and coaching to the Business Development team while maintaining direct responsibility for key client relationships and pursuit strategy. This position ensures that business development efforts are focused, disciplined, measurable, and aligned with company goals, operational capacity, and long-term growth objectives. The Director of BD serves as the central point of alignment between Business Development, Marketing, Operations, and Executive Leadership.
This role reports to Chief Operating Officer
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Create, own, and continuously manage the company’s business development strategy.
- Evaluate, identify, and prioritize target relationships, markets, and opportunities.
- Align BD targets and strategies to support annual and long-term company goals.
- Assign markets, sectors, and focus areas to BD staff by geography and client type.
- Establish clear objectives, tasks, and direction for each BD team member.
- Ensure BD strategy is realistic, actionable, and aligned with operational capacity.
- Lead, coach, and develop all Business Development and Marketing staff.
- Provide clear expectations, accountability, and performance feedback.
- Ensure the “second meeting” has personnel with construction expertise alongside assigned BD staff to support relationship development and pursuit strategy.
- Assign BD-related tasks across the organization as appropriate, including coordination with Operations and Preconstruction.
- Foster a disciplined, professional, and relationship-driven BD culture.
- Evaluate and identify pursuit targets; ensure go/no-go decisions are promptly entered for DOCS.
- Track BD staff calendars, movement, and activity to ensure efficiency and focus.
- Ensure consistent tracking of contacts, meetings, follow-ups, and outcomes within the CRM Software.
- Implement systems and processes that allow leadership to clearly see:
- Who is being contacted
- When contact occurs
- Purpose and outcome of each interaction
- Reporting & Executive Communication
- All BD activity by all BD staff
- Contact name, organization, date, and purpose
- Notes and outcomes from each interaction
- Upcoming meetings and planned follow-ups
- Clearly communicate trends, risks, opportunities, and recommended adjustments to strategy.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on market conditions and competitive landscape.
- Maintain direct BD responsibility for key accounts and strategic relationships.
- Ensure consistent, proactive engagement with priority clients and partners.
- Coordinate internal resources to support client needs and pursuit success.
- Act as a senior company representative and brand ambassador in the market.
- Directly manages and provides strategic direction to the Marketing Department.
- Direct and guide marketing efforts to ensure maximum efficacy and alignment with the overarching company goals.
- Ensure marketing materials, messaging, and campaigns are aligned with company mission, BD strategy and target pursuits.
- Collaborate with Marketing to position J. Davis Construction effectively within priority markets and sectors.
- Must be computer literate with a working knowledge of MS Office applications.
- Familiarity with construction project management software is a plus but not required.
- Strong business ethics with regards to budgets, invoices and payments.
- Key understanding of contracting methods; CMR, D/B, General Contracting.
- Working knowledge of project estimating, planning, scheduling and budgeting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills that align with core values.
- 10+ Years of experience with knowledge of construction, design, and cost management.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction science & management or related field is preferred.
