JOB SUMMARY:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Teach undergraduate chemistry courses in lecture, laboratory, hybrid, and/or online formats as assigned.
- Develop and maintain course syllabi, instructional materials, laboratory exercises, and assessments consistent with departmental and University standards.
- Employ effective instructional methods that promote student learning and academic success.
- Evaluate student performance in a timely and equitable manner and maintain accurate academic records.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office hours and provide academic assistance to students outside of class.
- Meet all assigned classes as scheduled and fulfill instructional responsibilities throughout the academic term.
- Advise undergraduate students regarding academic planning, degree requirements, and career opportunities.
- Participate in curriculum development, program assessment, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain appropriate laboratory safety standards and ensure compliance with all University and regulatory safety requirements.
- Maintain professional knowledge within the discipline through scholarly, professional, or creative activities appropriate to a non-tenure-track faculty appointment.
- Participate in departmental, college, and University meetings, committees, and other service activities as assigned.
- Assist with student recruitment, retention, and outreach activities.
- Support accreditation, assessment, and reporting activities as required.
- Maintain compliance with University policies, procedures, and applicable federal and state regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Comprehensive knowledge of general chemistry and related undergraduate chemistry disciplines.
- Knowledge of effective instructional practices and student learning assessment.
- Ability to teach chemistry lecture and laboratory courses effectively.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and chemical handling requirements.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to establish positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple assignments while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with instructional technology, learning management systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and other software associated with the position.
- Ability to maintain accurate academic and administrative records.
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
OTHER DUTIES:
- Other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Earned Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related discipline from a regionally accredited institution is required.
- ABD candidates with an anticipated completion date may be considered where appropriate.
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate chemistry courses.
- Experience teaching lecture and laboratory courses at the college or university level is preferred.
- Experience with instructional technology and learning management systems is preferred.
- Evidence of effective communication and student engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students.
- Commitment to maintaining professional competence within the discipline.
- The ideal candidate will possess the following required minimum qualifications to be selected as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Kentucky State University:

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed primarily in classrooms, laboratories, offices, and other University facilities.
- Requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking, hearing, and the use of standard office and laboratory equipment.
- Requires occasional lifting and carrying of laboratory materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Requires handling chemicals and laboratory equipment while following established laboratory safety procedures and applicable regulations.
- Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
