JOB SUMMARY: The Teaching Assistant will facilitate medical students enrolled in microbiological sciences coursework. In addition, the Teaching Assistant is well versed and experienced in all phases of microbiological sciences and has achieved a specific level of expertise.
CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following are a list of Academic Exercises that may be required of a Teaching Assistant in the Microbiological Sciences from time to time:
- Promote, preserve, and contribute directly to the mission of LECOM;
- Act as departmental representatives for Microbiology with faculty, staff and visitors in a professional, friendly manner at all times;
- Serve as a teaching assistant in Medical Microbiology, Immunology, and Pharmacology courses in medical, podiatry, and MMS courses;
- Assist in supervision of OMS & SPM students in laboratory and classroom settings;
- Guide, provide feedback, and motivate medical students in microbiology labs;
- Answer student questions on laboratory visuals (e.g., slides and culture plates);
- Identify microbiological structures on slides and images to facilitate student learning;
- Set up visuals (e.g., slides and culture plates) for laboratories;
- Proctor scheduled lecture examinations in lecture halls and the testing center;
- Assist in the management of the microbiology laboratory, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, receiving and storing specimens, and ordering reagents;
- Maintain student confidentiality, professional appearance and pleasant demeanor; and
- Accept other duties assigned/needed for the Departmental, School, and Institution’s needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
- Have content knowledge of microbiological sciences;
- Possess laboratory skills in microbiological sciences;
- Have pedagogical content knowledge and skills in teaching, and educational practice;
- Demonstrate professionalism behaviors;
- Understand student and patient’s privacy (i.e. FERPA, HIPAA…etc.);
- Use strong communications skills and computer literacy (MS Office Suit [i.e. Word, PowerPoint and Excel]) and accurate data entry skills;
- Exude strong organizational skills;
- Must be accurate and attentive to detail;
- Maintain an established work schedule;
- Effectively use interpersonal and communications skills, including tact and diplomacy;
- Effectively use organizational and planning skills, including attention to detail and follow-through;
- Assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands;
- Maintain confidentiality of work related information and materials;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships;
- Be flexible to accept other duties needed/assigned for educational needs;
- Work cooperatively and collegially with others, consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect and EEO rules and regulations;
- Report to work as scheduled, ready to devote full attention and energy to the important work of LECOM; and
- Accept work directives from managers and supervisors in a respectful and cooperative manner.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and experience equivalent to: Be a current student in the LECOM DME Ph.D. program who has successfully completed the DME course in Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Principles of Antimicrobial Therapy, and Microbial Pathogenesis or have a Master’s degree in microbiological science required.
