We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Special Education Math Teacher (6th grade) to join our team, with one full-time position available for the 2026-27 school year at Kennedy Middle School. The ideal candidate will maximize the learning experience of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living, while implementing district-approved curriculum and fostering a safe, supportive learning environment. This position requires a commitment to educational excellence, collaboration with colleagues, and engagement with families to support student success.
Responsibilities
- Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations of students to identify learning issues and recommend courses of action to overcome challenges and maximize learning.
- Assist in developing Individual Educational Plans ("IEPs") for students.
- Assist students and teaching staff in implementing students' IEPs and behavior management plans.
- Coordinate with outside agencies, organizations, and institutions, including state and federal authorities, as needed.
- Coordinate with administrators and other teaching staff to ascertain individual students' abilities and needs, including students with special needs, and familiarize stakeholders with social work services.
- Serve as a ready resource to students and parents, providing counseling that leads each student toward increased personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; serve as liaison between home and school.
- Continue to acquire professional knowledge of current developments in the educational field through seminars, workshops, professional meetings, or research, and maintain professional relationships with institutions of higher learning and the business community.
- Organize and maintain accurate and complete student records, providing information to prospective colleges and employers as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Select and requisition appropriate books, aids, and other supplies and equipment, and maintain inventory records.
Requirements
- Valid Michigan teaching certification with appropriate endorsements.
- Bachelor's degree with a major in an appropriate special education area.
- Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing methods, and proven strategies for maximizing the educational experience of students with special needs.
- Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Work Schedule
Standard teacher work schedule as set forth in the Teachers' Unit Contract.
