Position Overview
The Department Manager is responsible for the department's overall leadership, financial performance, operational effectiveness, engineering quality, and growth. Reporting to the Regional Manager, this role provides technical leadership on complex projects while overseeing departmental performance, client relationships, business development, and staff development.
Operating with a high degree of independence, the Department Manager is accountable for achieving departmental goals related to profitability, utilization, staffing, work in progress, collections, quality, and client satisfaction. The role serves as a key link between leadership, employees, and clients, ensuring alignment with Larson Engineering's standards, strategic priorities, and long-term growth objectives.
Success in this role requires strong engineering expertise, leadership, sound judgment, business acumen, and a commitment to developing people while delivering exceptional service to clients in an employee-owned environment.

Typical DutiesResponsibilities
- Provides overall leadership and supervision for the department, including direct management, coaching, mentoring, and performance development of assigned staff.
- Applies advanced and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices across a broad range of projects, clients, and operational situations.
- Responsible for the department's overall financial performance, including profitability, utilization, work in progress (WIP) management, budgeting, forecasting, collections, and achievement of departmental growth goals.
- Oversee the quality, accuracy, and consistency of engineering deliverables produced by the department. Ensures compliance with company standards, engineering best practices, quality expectations, and Design Safety requirements.
- Leads business development efforts by building strong client relationships, maintaining high levels of client satisfaction, securing new work, and contributing to the long-term growth and market success of the department and company.
- Proactively collaborates with the Regional Manager to identify hiring needs and ensure current and future staffing levels are aligned with departmental objectives, project demands, and organizational growth goals.
- Supports employee engagement, accountability, career development, and team performance within the department.
- Monitors project performance and lead complex, high-risk, or financially challenged projects.
- Contributes to future planning, operational improvements, and cross-functional collaboration within the office and across the organization.
- Represents the company professionally with clients, business partners, industry organizations, and the community.
- Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Licensed Professional Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program plus appropriate continuing education.
- Minimum 10 years of engineering experience
- Makes decisions independently on engineering problems and methods and seeks help when necessary.
- Represents the organization in meetings and when resolving important problems with clients.
- Uses advanced engineering techniques with good engineering judgment and practices. Find scientific testing or research to back up the judgments.
- Is a liaison between the Regional Manager and employees and/or clients.
- Oversee major projects or projects in financial trouble, projects with complex engineering, and/or problem projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- General knowledge/understanding of leading within an Employee-Owned organization.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing high-performing technical teams and direct reports.
- Strong business development and client relationship management experience, with a proven ability to secure and grow client accounts.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor staff, support career development, and build team engagement.
- Working knowledge of applicable engineering codes, regulations, safety standards, and industry best practices.
- Commitment to collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and client service excellence.
