About Longroad Energy
Longroad Energy is a Boston, MA headquartered renewable energy developer focused on the development, ownership, and operation/asset management of wind, solar, and battery storage projects throughout North America. Founded in 2016, Longroad has developed more than 7.2 GW and owns 5.4 GW of wind, solar, and energy storage projects across the United States, with more than 34 GW of projects currently in development. Our vision is to create lasting value for our shareholders, communities, and employees by responsibly developing, owning, and operating renewable energy projects. We have assembled a world-class team with a passion for renewable energy innovation and a commitment to advancing the transition to clean energy.
Job Purpose
The Senior Operations Manager is the operational backbone of the portfolio. This role exists to translate company strategy into field execution — ensuring Operations Managers have the direction, decisions, and accountability they need to run their sites well. An SOM doesn't just manage projects; they manage managers. The measure of success is a team and a portfolio that runs with increasing independence while meeting key performance metrics.
Based in Milford, Utah, this position oversees field operations, self-performing teams, and third-party service providers across a regional portfolio of wind, solar, and battery energy storage (BESS) facilities. The SOM partners closely with Development, Construction, and Asset Management on project transitions and long-term asset performance, and serves as the primary operational interface with external stakeholders including utilities, regulatory agencies, and contractors. Regular travel throughout UT.
Responsibilities:
Safety, Compliance & Asset Performance
- Drive and demonstrate a culture of safety across all managed sites.
- Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, environmental requirements, NERC/FERC standards, contracts, warranties, and company policies.
- Maintain accurate operational records, monitor plant performance, and implement cost-effective solutions that improve reliability, efficiency, and overall asset performance.
- All decisions executed in compliance with the corporate DOA guidance document.
Portfolio & Operations Leadership
- Own the operational performance of a portfolio of renewable energy projects — wind, solar, and BESS — across safety, availability, OPEX, and compliance.
- Oversee the operation and maintenance of all assigned facilities, including substations, high-voltage systems, generation tie-lines, collection systems, balance of plant equipment, wind turbine generators (WTGs), BESS, and PV inverters.
- Lead the transition of projects from construction into operations, ensuring seamless handoff and long-term operational success.
- Coordinate site and generation tie-line outage planning, restoration activities, and operational readiness across assigned facilities.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for operational issues below Director level resolving issues independently whenever possible and escalating complex matters with clear recommendations
- Identify and communicate site and portfolio-level risks, opportunities, and OPEX drivers to the Director and VP.
Financial Accountability
- Own the OPEX budget for the managed portfolio — forecast, track, and explain variance. Understand how site-level decisions compound into EBITDA outcomes at portfolio scale.
- Manage operating budgets, forecasts, contracts, OEM relationships, and regional contractor partnerships to support reliable and cost-effective operations.
- Negotiate and manage contractor and vendor relationships in line with the corporate Delegation of Authority (DOA); escalate when contract terms are disputed or performance falls short.
- Participate in OPEX budget development for new projects entering the portfolio.
People Leadership & Development
- Develop and hold accountable the Operations Manager team — building their judgment, ownership, and independence, not just their compliance.
- Hire, coach, and evaluate employees while fostering accountability, collaboration, and adherence to Longroad's SHINE values and Code of Conduct.
- Identify high performers and develop them intentionally; conduct timely, direct performance conversations at every level.
- Develop a high-performing team by empowering employees to take ownership, make sound decisions, and operate with confidence and independence.
Stakeholder Management
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal teams, utilities, regulatory agencies, landowners, contractors, and local communities.
- Represent the portfolio professionally in any room — ops, finance, or executive. Convey competence and authority.
- Prepare reports and presentations for leadership as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in operations and maintenance of wind, generator lead lines, BESS, solar, or thermal energy facility.
- Experience leading supervisors, managers, or multi-site operations teams.
- Demonstrated track record of OPEX budget management with accountability for financial outcomes.
- Experience administering contracts and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Ability to safely perform the essential physical requirements of the role, including:
- Climbing 300-foot wind turbines
- Lifting up to 50 pounds overhead
- Meeting the under 310-pound safety equipment weight maximum
- Proficient computer and software skills.
- Ability to travel as required throughout the assigned region.
- Valid driver's license.
- 24/7 on-call availability for emergencies when needed.
Desired/Preferred Qualifications
- Technical 2–4-year college degree or comparable certifications in engineering, energy, or a related field.
- Experience managing a portfolio of multiple simultaneous projects or sites.
- Experience supporting utility-scale (100 MW+) wind, solar, or battery energy storage facilities.
- Demonstrated track record of developing direct reports into stronger, more independent operators or leaders.
- Contractor negotiation and contract management experience at portfolio scale.
- Familiarity with NERC standards, interconnection requirements, and FERC compliance obligations.
- Prior technical experience related to renewable energy operations.
Characteristics Necessary for Success
- Leads with courage and humility - comfortable making difficult decisions while remaining open to feedback and new perspectives.
- Builds trust through integrity, consistency, and follow-through.
- Creates clarity during ambiguity and helps others stay focused when priorities shift.
- Approaches challenges with curiosity, seeking root causes and long-term solutions.
- Balances accountability with coaching, helping others grow while maintaining high standards.
