Definitions Used Throughout the Job Description:
Direct Supervision: An Electric Meter Technician - Level 5 or Electric Meter Technician – Working Crew Lead observing an employee closely enough at working level to provide immediate feedback in case the employee is about to perform an unsafe act (work practice). The purpose of this close supervision is to ensure proper safety rules, operating procedures, and electrical safety-related work practices are being followed.
General Purpose of Work
- Perform single-phase electric meter testing. Perform current and potential transformer testing. Operate testing equipment in alignment with company standards, following the regulatory framework set by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.
- Performs work under general supervision of the Electric Meter Working Supervisor or Manager.
Subject to Evaluation
Following a six-month period from the commencement of Level 1A, the employee may progress to Level 1B. The progression to Level 1B is subject to an evaluation of skills. Approval from both Electric Meter Shop Working Crew Leader and Supervisor or Manager is required for the employee to progress to Level 1B.
A Level 1B employee can perform single-phase self-contained electric meter field exchanges or removals.
General Duties
- Tests, cleans, adjusts, and repairs single-phase, non-instrument-rated electric meters and associated electronic equipment in the Electric Meter Shop.
- Test current and potential transformers in the Electric Meter Shop.
- Prepare current and potential transformers for field issue.
- Performs meter inventories.
- Under Direct Supervision: performs self-contained single-phase electric meter exchanges, removals and installs.
- Reads electric meters and maintains proper records of readings.
- Performs housekeeping duties in the Electric Meter Shop.
- Performs driver maintenance on and operates Company vehicles.
- Operates and maintains manually and electrically operated hand tools, voltmeters, ammeters, and meter-testing equipment.
- Performs other incidental and related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate's degree in electronics or electrical technology or completed equivalent education as demonstrated by two years of comparable electrical engineering college work sufficient to provide a good, fundamental knowledge of electrical theory is required.
- Must have demonstrated computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets, and other software.
- Must have demonstrated satisfactory aptitude and learning ability for Electric Meter Technician duties.
- Able to perform continuous light, active work with occasional periods of heavy work which requires lifting and/or carrying a minimum of 75 lbs. Use of fingers, both hands, and both legs (prostheses not acceptable).
- Able to reach above shoulders, push, pull, crawl, balance, stoop, crouch, kneel, repeatedly bend, climb (using both arms and both legs), feel, talk, hear, and smell.
- Must have clear vision, depth perception, and field of vision in both eyes. Able to distinguish basic colors and shades of color (eyeglasses acceptable).
- Must be neat in appearance.
- Must have and keep a Wisconsin driver's license.
- Must have the stamina to spend a large part of his/her time working outdoors in extremes of weather.
- Must be reasonably available for overtime work assignments.
Knowledge and Skills to be Acquired
- Must learn and practice all safety rules which apply to work.
- Must learn how to interact with customers in a calm, courteous, and competent manner.
- Must acquire knowledge of the principles of electric metering, electronic theory, circuitry, and meter construction and operation.
- Must acquire knowledge of the Company's electrical installation guidelines and procedures.
- Must acquire knowledge of the purpose, function, and interrelationship of the component parts of the electric system as it relates to metering.
- Must acquire knowledge of the service area and demonstrate an ability to work alone and plan and organize work.
- Must acquire an improved level of efficiency in meter testing consistent with the classification.
- Must acquire knowledge of Customer Information System and Work Order System (examples: C2M and KloudGin).
Pre-employment will require satisfactory completion of a background check and drug screen.
