We are seeking a 5th Grade Math teacher to plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in a school learning environment that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Work is performed under the supervision of the Principal and the Teacher will work closely with School Leadership, students, teachers, and parents.

Merrick Academy is one of the first charter schools to open in New York City and the first to open (2000) in Queens. With a rich history and deep roots in the local community, Merrick Academy is an all-inclusive, independent Charter School with approximately 600 students in grades K-5 and a faculty and staff of 90. Queens’ first charter school, Merrick, has been educating children for over 20 years. Merrick Academy is a STEAM-based school cultivating critical thinking, problem-solving, and inquiry amongst all learners in an environment that provides extensive whole-child support based on ensuring equity and empowerment for all learners through effective and innovative approaches to teaching and learning fostered by a world-class faculty.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver rigorous, standards-aligned instruction that promotes critical thinking, conceptual understanding, and high levels of student engagement.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment where all scholars are known, valued, challenged, and supported.
- Collaborate effectively with co-teachers, special education teachers, instructional leaders, and related service providers to ensure equitable learning opportunities for all students.
- Differentiate instruction using research-based strategies to meet the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of diverse learners.
- Use formative and summative assessment data to monitor student progress, identify learning gaps, and implement targeted small-group instruction and interventions.
- Foster meaningful mathematical discourse, inquiry, problem solving, and student collaboration through engaging instructional practices.
- Implement the school's curriculum with fidelity while adapting instruction to maximize student growth and mastery of grade-level standards.
- Integrate literacy, technology, cross-curricular connections, and authentic learning experiences that prepare scholars for success beyond the classroom.
- Build strong, positive relationships with students and families through consistent communication and a shared commitment to student achievement.
- Participate fully in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), instructional coaching, collaborative planning, lesson internalization, and data analysis meetings.
- Monitor student progress regularly, provide timely and actionable feedback, and maintain accurate records of academic performance.
- Maintain an organized, engaging classroom environment that reflects current learning, celebrates student work, and supports student independence.
- Supervise students at all times while maintaining a safe, structured, and positive learning environment.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, flexibility, and a growth mindset by embracing feedback and continuously refining instructional practice.
- Demonstrate a willingness to participate in school-wide initiatives, professional learning, family engagement events, committees, and activities that strengthen the Merrick Academy community.
- Perform all instructional and administrative responsibilities—including attendance, grading, progress reports, report cards, parent conferences, and other duties assigned by school leadership—with accuracy, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence.
Non-Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Continue professional growth through instructional coaching, professional learning, curriculum development, conferences, and independent study.
- Demonstrate proficiency with instructional technology platforms including Google Workspace applications (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Classroom), Zoom, student information systems, assessment platforms, and other educational technologies.
- Support school-wide initiatives, committees, and special projects as assigned by school leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designated school administrator in support of the school's mission and vision.
Qualifications & Behavioral Competencies
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required; Master’s Degree preferred
- Knowledgeable on the Danielson Aligned Lesson Plan Template
- Able to interact with colleagues, parents, students, and visitors professionally
- New York State Certification in subject area
- Strong instructional and classroom management skills
- Demonstrated mastery and enthusiasm for content knowledge
- Strong organization, planning, and time management skills
- Professional and friendly demeanor and the ability to communicate successfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Computer proficiency using email services and Google Workspace applications (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, and Classroom)
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
