Job Title: Finance Accountant
Department: Business Office
Reports To: Executive Director of Finance
FLSA Status: Exempt
Position Summary:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing advanced accounting functions in support of Moffat County School District RE-1's financial operations. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with governmental accounting standards, and effective support of payroll and accounts payable processes. The position works closely with the Executive Director of Finance and plays a key role in maintaining fiscal integrity across the District.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist in the preparation, analysis, and reconciliation of general ledger accounts and financial statements
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, GASB standards, and Colorado Department of Education reporting requirements
- Assist in payroll processing, including audits, reconciliations, and reporting
- Support Accounts Payable functions, including invoice review, coding, and payment processing
- Monitor and maintain internal controls over financial transactions
- Assist with annual audit preparation and coordination with external auditors
- Support budget development, monitoring, and forecasting activities
- Assist in the preparation of required federal, state, and local financial reports
- Analyze financial data and provide recommendations to leadership
- Maintain documentation and ensure audit readiness at all times
- Provide guidance and support to accounting, payroll, and AP staff
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; equivalent experience will also be considered.
- Strong understanding of governmental and fund accounting
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience (Required)
- Proficiency in financial software systems and Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
Working Conditions:
- Primarily office-based environment
- Occasional extended hours during audit, payroll dates or budget cycles

- Occasional lifting of office materials up to 50 lbs

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
