Job Summary
The Nurse Manager provides clinical and administrative leadership for a defined patient care area. Responsibilities include 24-hour accountability for the management and long- term planning of the patient care area. This includes implementation of the nursing process, staff development and enhancement of the quality of patient care specific to the age/development of the patient population and cost containment. The Nurse Manager provides leadership, motivation and clinical expertise in the management and coordination of a specific Nursing unit(s) to provide quality patient care.
Essential Functions
- JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:
Demonstrates the technical/professional knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for the successful operations of the department including, where applicable, age specific competency. *
1. Establishes and implements standards of care based on evidence or best practice and evaluates patient care through the application of the organizational policies, procedures and practices.
2. Provides a clear sense of direction to the department secures relevant information, Identifies key issues and sets priorities. Acts on and makes timely decisions with administrative direction.
3. Creates an environment that supports the patient experience, heightens the overall perception of the hospital as a premier healthcare provider and consistently achieves organization wide goal for patient satisfaction.
4. Collaborates with other departments to create systems to problem solve ongoing issues that impact departmental/organizational goals and/or patient care delivery.
5. Schedules staff to meet patient care needs. Develops staffing schedule and makes staffing adjustments on own and subsequent shifts. Communicating staffing concerns, overtime patterns, and absenteeism. Reviews time and attendance for staff and submits to payroll on time and without errors.
6. Effectively establishes a system to share internal and external communication to direct reports by conducting regular staff meetings and maintain a system of communication such as a communication book or bulletin board.
7. Interviews and selects candidates for hire. Ensures new employees are oriented to the department and receive appropriate training. Achieves designated turnover and vacancy rates for the area of responsibility.
8. Ensure staff receives effective and timely feedback for performance/competency. Provides meaningful recognition to staff that exceed of meets expectations.
9. Demonstrates and applies a clear understanding of regulations applicable to patient care and other unit of departmental functions (i.e. JCAH, NYDOH).
10. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible when change occurs. Copes with and manages change as well as helps others to adapt to change. Initiates change when needed.

1. Demonstrates personal excellence in customer service for both internal and external customers.

5. Creates and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, self, coworkers and facility. - PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT:
1. Recognizes an opportunity for improvement collects and assesses data. Demonstrates the ability to develop implement and evaluate a Performance Improvement Plan. Participates in Departmental/Hospital-wide activities which improve processes/outcomes.
2. Achieves effective departmental compliance with performance appraisals, staff competencies and annual employee Health requirements.
3. Achieves and maintains competitive departmental performance and productivity measures as defined by standard benchmarking agencies.
4. Identifies needs, plans and facilitates staff education and development to maintain unit based clinical/professional competency. Utilizes resources to maintain and improve self knowledge and development and fosters the same for employees.
5. Encourages employees to participate in the employee’s opinion survey. Ensures departmental score for overall job satisfaction is equal to or greater that the national healthcare norm
6. Demonstrates compliance with licensure/certification requirements and the timeliness of their submission.
- BUDGET:
1. Completes operational and capital budgets that reflect required workload, forecasted units of service and programmatic changes.
2. Demonstrates ability to manage variances in the budget including Human Resource management and management of expenses. Monitors budget expenditures as reflected in accurate, objective variance analysis.
3. End of year financial performance meets budget expectations.
4. Collaborates with employees to control costs and pursue additional revenue opportunities.

Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree Required
- 3 years related experience within designated specialty demonstrated with leadership qualities.
- National Certification in area of expertise preferred
- Registered Nurse New York - New York State Board of Nursing Required BLS Basic Life Support - American Heart Association Required
