JOB DESCRIPTION
Reports To: School Principal
Summary of Position:
Montessori believes in guiding the students to grow academically, emotionally and socially. The Montessori classroom is designed to engage students in an environment that is conducive to learning and academic growth. It is the teacher’s responsibility to attain and maintain this environment. The Teacher guides the student through assignments by demonstrating independence and personal accountability. Working with small groups, the Teacher observes and supports the students through work cycles and gathers completed work. In addition, the Teacher works with the teaching Assistant to ensure that the environment is Ordered, Organized and Beautiful.
Core Areas of Responsibility:
Academics
- Plan and Implement daily/weekly lesson plans, which align to the Pennsylvania and Montessori Curriculum standards and are consistent with the MRCS mission and vision
- Assist students with daily work plans, directing them to resources and guiding their progress as well as checking completed work
- Assist the Teaching Assistant in developing the Teaching Assistant’s understanding of Montessori theories, concepts, principles and applications
- Coordinate and collaborate with staff members including Title 1 and Special Education staff to support the academic and personal growth of each student
- Coordinate and collaborate with unit members at unit meetings to share ideas, concepts and strategies for implementing the curriculum
- Participate and actively contribute to team meetings as requested
- Maintain communication with parents and families in a professional and supportive manner to ensure that families understand the Montessori Regional Charter School program and philosophy
- Attend Individualized Education Plan meetings and implement additional educational supports as needed
- Maintain records and documentation related to the student's academic, social and emotional progress
- Utilizing school wide assessments, identify students who are at risk, and develop action plans/intervention strategies
- Collaboratively develop unit wide formative assessments on an ongoing basis to monitor the progress of students
Montessori Physical Environment
- Maintain the Montessori environment which includes Order, Organization and Beauty as well as the safety and security of the physical environment
- Assist students in removing and replacing materials in the proper locations and ensure the organization and order of materials
- Ensure hallways and cubbies are orderly and clean
- Assist students and teaching assistant in keeping surfaces clean and orderly
- Assist students in daily clean up after lunch and other activities
- Notify maintenance of conditions in the classroom that need repair or replacement of items that are broken or pose a safety problem following outlined procedures
Record Keeping and Administrative
- Daily attendance logged into PowerSchool system
- Collect daily communications from families and ensure routing to the proper location (transportation notes, permission slips, attendance notes etc.)
- Ensure transportation plans for each child (dismissal) are clearly communicated and implemented
- Checking and assessing daily assignments
- Monitor consumable supplies and ordering following outlined MRCS procedures
- Gather materials in preparation for planned lessons
- Fill out copy requests for routine and pre planned lessons
- Proctor PSSA testing annually (varies by unit)
- Proctor School Wide assessments including but not limited to Acadience and NWEA Assessments
- Regularly maintain students’ progress in the school’s designated record keeping system and inform families of student progress.
Classroom Management
- Maintain a safe, secure and productive environment at all times by monitoring student behavior and interactions
- Be thoroughly familiar with the MRCS Code of Conduct procedures and utilize consistent vocabulary and processes throughout the school and ensure a focused, productive Montessori environment
- Arrival (am) and Dismissal (pm) duties – Maintain student order and assist students in established routines to ensure the orderly transition to and from the school day
- Supervise students at lunch and/or recess following established duty requirements
- Transition students from classroom routine to lunch, recess, specials and other school activities by assuring that routines are followed including the quiet and orderly travel in hallways and in and out of the building
- Ensure that students are safe, secure and accounted for at all times including during transitions, lunch, recess and on field trips
- Assist students in resolving interpersonal issues.

- Staff members are expected to maintain appropriate boundaries with family members to ensure that no student or family feels favored or, conversely, disregarded. Staff should not establish personal relationships outside the school day or activities with the families of children who are students in their classroom.
- The goal of Montessori is to encourage independence and self-reliance. The principle of “Do not do for a child what he/she can do for themselves” should be considered when assisting and guiding children to their highest level of ability
- Students must be treated with kindness, patience, forgiveness and tolerance for differences

Education/Experience:
College degree required, Education degree preferred
Valid Pennsylvania Teaching Certification for Middle Level Science and Social Studies
Ability to attend Montessori Training as required
