- Previous involvement supporting commissioning strategy development, system turnover, startup planning, or engineering design reviews is strongly preferred.
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to support the engineering, design review, and commissioning planning efforts for a large-scale power generation project in Texas. This position serves as the technical bridge between engineering, construction, commissioning, and operations by ensuring plant systems are designed, installed, and tested in a manner that supports safe, efficient, and reliable startup. The Commissioning Engineer will participate early in the project lifecycle, reviewing engineering deliverables, supporting commissioning strategies, developing system turnover boundaries, and providing technical support through startup, performance testing, and final plant turnover.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review engineering deliverables from a commissioning, operability, maintainability, and startup readiness perspective.
- Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, HAZOPs, model reviews, and operational readiness reviews.
- Evaluate engineering designs for commissioning accessibility, testing capability, temporary commissioning requirements, maintainability, operational flexibility, and future plant expansion.
- Review and provide technical comments on P&IDs, single-line diagrams, control narratives, cause & effect matrices, logic diagrams, equipment datasheets, and vendor documentation.
- Support development of commissioning strategies, system turnover boundaries, commissioning system definitions, and startup sequencing.
- Assist with development of testing, energization, and phased startup philosophies for gas turbines, reciprocating engines, BESS, electrical systems, and balance of plant equipment.
- Review plant control system architecture, DCS design, turbine controls, SCADA systems, protection schemes, and system interfaces to ensure safe commissioning and startup.
- Provide technical support to field commissioning teams by reviewing field changes, engineering queries, red-line markups, and startup issues.
- Assist with development of commissioning procedures, test documentation, and startup execution plans.
- Participate in functional testing, loop checks, logic validation, first-fire activities, synchronization, reliability runs, performance testing, and final plant turnover activities.
Job Requirements:
- Strong understanding of commissioning methodologies and startup planning for utility-scale power generation facilities.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, vendor documentation, and control system documentation.
- Working knowledge of DCS, SCADA, instrumentation, electrical systems, and control philosophies.
- Familiarity with commissioning standards, system turnover processes, and engineering change management.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interface effectively with EPC contractors, OEMs, engineering teams, construction personnel, and plant operations.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
Education / Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience supporting commissioning, startup, engineering, or design reviews for utility-scale power generation projects.
- Experience with Siemens SGT800, GE LM6000, reciprocating engine power plants, BESS, or combined cycle facilities is highly desirable.
- Previous experience supporting behind-the-meter generation, power system integration, or utility-scale commissioning projects is preferred.
