SUMMARY: The Mobile Wastewater Operator serves the Long Island, NY service area. In this position, you will monitor and adjust the various treatment processes to ensure compliance with all permits and regulatory agencies. The mobile wastewater operator collects and records data and wastewater samples from their assigned facilities. The operator performs preventative maintenance on equipment as per the operations and maintenance manuals for the contracted facilities. The mobile wastewater operator is preferred to have a valid NYS Wastewater treatment license however unlicensed candidates will also be considered for this role. The mobile wastewater operator is an independent and well-organized self-starter who can manage his or her schedule to complete assigned site coverage requirements as noted below.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform critical testing of facility operations, such as PH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solids , nitrate ammonia ,chlorine, etc., needed to monitor system conditions, and maintain compliance with discharge permits
- Enact process control measures based on sampling results to ensure continued compliance with facility discharge permits.
- Collect required samples, log in samples correctly and accurately, and submit samples to laboratory and review results to ensure permit compliance.
- Complete Discharge Monitoring Reports as required by facilities permits.
- Maintain active license status for all current water and wastewater state licenses.
- Perform general preventative maintenance on treatment plant equipment such as blower oil, filter and belt changes and pulling and inspecting submersible pumps, etc. (Further defined below in addendum A)
- Maintain complete, accurate, legible records of all phases of facility operations both electronically and manually as required.
- Maintain complete, accurate, legible records of all equipment and plant maintenance.
- Assist in preparing monthly written operating report based on facility’s operation and/or maintenance records for the client, employer or regulatory agency as required.
- Inform Supervisor in a timely manner of plant problems, upsets, plant expansion, repairs, etc.
- Communicate with supervisory staff as well as other operators to ensure smooth plant operations as well as reporting issues in a timely manner.
- Work conscientiously and adhere to NSU’s EH&S policies and procedures.
- Be aware of and report safety hazards utilizing NSU’s Eworkorder program.
- Required to be part of a 24 hour on call rotation.
- Be prepared to discuss in a professional manner the plant operations with employer, client, visitors, or regulatory personnel.
- Operate plants to meet all regulatory guidelines and responsibilities.
- Assist maintenance personnel with pump, blower, motor, valve, etc. removal.
- Maintain accurate records for gasoline, mileage, timesheets, expenses, etc.
- Work scheduled weekends and occasional holidays for assigned facilities.
- Project a positive image to clients, regulatory agencies, operators, engineers, etc.
- Confined Space Entry – this may be required on occasion after thorough training provided by NSU
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to three months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 1 year of wastewater experience, preferred but, not required
- 40-hour work week: Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:30 pm (30-minute lunch)
- Must be available to work weekends and holidays as requested
- Overtime as required
- Available for emergency situations
- Available for a 24 hour on call rotation
- Certificates, licenses, and registrations:
- Valid Driver’s License
- New York State wastewater /New York State drinking water license preferred
- Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook experience preferred

- Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions (non-weather)
- Frequently work near moving mechanical parts
- Occasionally work in high, precarious places
- Occasionally work around fumes, airborne particles, or toxic chemicals
- Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions
- Occasionally exposed to extreme heat or cold (non-weather)
- Occasionally exposed to blood borne and airborne pathogens or infectious materials
- Occasionally exposed to loud noise (examples: metal can manufacturing, large earth-moving equipment)
- Occasionally exposed to very loud noise (example: jack hammer work)

Pay range: $23.00–$38.50.00 per hour, based on certifications, licenses, and relevant experience.
