Omaha Track Equipment, an established Kansas City company, is seeking a Detail & Prep Tech to join our growing organization in the fast-paced heavy equipment industry. Job Summary
The Detail & Prep Technician is responsible for the final stages of the vehicle upfitting production line. This role ensures that newly upfitted railroad trucks (ranging from light-duty mechanics trucks to heavy-duty crane and hi-rail vehicles) are meticulously cleaned, correctly branded with industrial and railroad decals, and thoroughly inspected for cosmetic readiness before delivery to the customer. This position requires extreme attention to detail, physical stamina, and a strong commitment to quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Vehicle Wash & De-greasing
- Thoroughly wash and detail truck exteriors, cabs, chassis, and newly installed upfit bodies (e.g., service bodies, cranes, hi-rail gear, and platforms).
- Remove shop grease, weld slag dust, overspray, and industrial residues from vehicle surfaces.
- Clean truck interiors, including vacuuming, wiping down surfaces, and ensuring cabs are spotless and ready for operator handover.
- Safely operate high- pressure washing equipment, chemical cleaning agents, and specialized detailing tools.
2. Decal & Fleet Graphic Installation
- Apply high-visibility safety striping (CONSPICUITY tape), reflective decals, and fleet branding graphics precisely according to engineering drawings and customer specifications (e.g., BNSF, Union Pacific, NS standards).
- Measure, align, and prep vehicle surfaces to ensure decals are centered, level, and free of air bubbles, wrinkles, or peeling.
- Apply mandatory safety and operational placards (e.g., crane load charts, hi-rail warning labels, PTO indicators, and weight certifications) to their exact designated locations.
3. Pre-Delivery Prep & Quality Inspection
- Perform final cosmetic inspections to identify and touch up minor paint chips, scratches, or blemishes incurred during the build process.
- Ensure all loose ship-with items (e.g., outrigger pads, remote controls, safety kits) are accounted for and properly secured in the vehicle.
- Coordinate with the Quality Control team to ensure the vehicle looks immaculate and matches the final delivery presentation standards.
4. Shop Safety & Maintenance
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe wash bay and decal station.
- Safely handle, store, and dispose of cleaning chemicals and adhesives in accordance with OSHA and SDS guidelines.
- Report any mechanical or cosmetic defects found during the cleaning process to the Shop Foreman immediately.
Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 1-2 years of experience in automotive/commercial truck detailing, industrial painting prep, or vinyl graphic/decal installation preferred. Experience in manufacturing or heavy equipment environment is a major plus.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to meticulously apply decals, catch minor surface imperfections, and follow precise layout measurements.
- Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, and climb ladders/truck bodies for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Comfort working in wet environments (wash bay).
- Technical Skills: Ability to read basic layout drawings or spec sheets for decal placement. Proficiency using basic hand tools (heat guns, squeegees, razor knives).
- Dependability: Strong work ethic, punctuality, and the ability to work efficiently to meet strict production and shipping deadlines.
- License: Valid Driver's License required
