Relief Nursery provides comprehensive family support services that are easily accessible to families who are raising children birth through five years of age and who are experiencing high levels of stress. We provide early intervention that centers on building successful and resilient children and strengthening parents. Our staff work as a team to provide a unique array of support, from therapeutic classrooms and outreach programs, to parenting education, substance use disorder recovery support and more.
Our Skills Trainers support children in our Therapeutic Early Childhood Program at Relief Nursery. The program provides behavioral health services and early childhood special education services to children ages 3 to 5 years who meet eligibility requirements. Skills Trainers provide classroom support to children Monday through Thursday from 8:15 am – 2:45 pm at Relief Nursery’s Eugene and Springfield sites. Skills Trainers also provide support in other settings, including Friday and weekday evening parenting classes, as well as skills training and child care for enrolled children and their siblings during therapy sessions. Bilingual Skills Trainers provide these services to Spanish-speaking families as well.
Responsibilities
1. Provide and document billable skills training interventions in the form of emotional, social, and behavioral support to young children during all program hours using Positive Behavioral Support Interventions, and attachment-based, relational engagement with children to promote healthy social-emotional development
2. Ensure the safety of children safe in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
3. Collaborate with team in implementing the goals and objectives specified on the child’s IFSP (Special Education), and Treatment Plan (Mental Health). Support data collection and documentation as needed.
4. Collaborate with team in curriculum planning and program implementation.
5. Conduct phone calls with families when needed.
6. Participate in designated team and all staff meetings, training, supervision and Relief Nursery special events. These occasionally fall in the late afternoon or evening.
7. Participate in a minimum of 24 hours of training per year and engage in other educational requirements of the position.
8. Provide support for weekly food pantry operations as assigned.
9. Act in accordance with responsibilities and protocols set forth in Oregon Child Abuse Reporting laws and Relief Nursery policy.
10. Perform other relevant duties to support program and agency needs as assigned.
11. Weekly Distribution of Time
a. Client Services (Billable Time): ~70%, 29 hours
i. Example model:
- 12-24 hours of in-classroom time (skills training)
- 2-10 hours individual/family skills training outside of class hours (including evening and Friday parent classes/groups)
- 1 hours of team meetings (concentrated in two weeks of the month)
b. Documentation: 20%, 8 hours
c. Other: 10%, 3 hours (Trainings, meetings, other)
d. Approximately half of the billable time for the Bilingual Skills Trainer should be conducted in Spanish.
Required Qualifications

- Must qualify as a Qualified Mental Health Associate (QMHA) at time of hire or be able to obtain eligibility within 30 days of hire. Assistance will be provided with this process.
- Bachelor’s degree in behavioral health, family services, social work, early childhood education or related field with experience working in an early childhood setting; or a combination of relevant education and experience.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish: Applicants must be able to pass a Spanish Language Proficiency test, allowing them to be certified as a CLSS provider with the State of Oregon, within the first 30 days of employment. Assistance will be provided with this process.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a team member, understand developmentally appropriate early childhood practices, and early childhood child guidance techniques consistent with a therapeutic approach.
- Positive background check clearance from the Department of Early Learning and Care’s Central Background Registry (CBR), Oregon Criminal History & Abuse Records Database System (ORCHARDS), and Healthcare Integrity and Protection Data Bank as specified by the Coordinated Care Organization contract.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to support children and families experiencing high levels of stress.
- Ability to work effectively and respectfully with diverse individuals.
- Proficient in computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office, Outlook, and web-based platforms.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and current insurance coverage.
- Current Pediatric First Aid/CPR and Food Handler’s cards, or the ability to obtain required certifications upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications refer to job-related education or training, experience, skills, etc. that are beneficial to the position and Relief Nursery, but not a requirement for the position.
- Knowledge of and lived experience with Latino/a families and culture.
- Step 6 or above in the Oregon Registry Online.
- One year paid employment working in an early childhood classroom setting supporting children with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, kneel, sit on the floor or in child-sized chairs, lift and carry children up to a certain weight (up to approximately 40 pounds), bend, reach, and sometimes run to respond to emergencies, all while maintaining a high level of alertness and physical stamina to engage with young children throughout the day; this may also include good vision and hearing for observing children's behavior and interactions. Ability to be incidentally exposed to common childhood illnesses and other common colds/flus/viruses.
