PCBA Quality Control Supervisor
Position Summary
The PCBA Quality Control Supervisor is responsible for leading quality control inspection activities for printed circuit board assemblies, also referred to as PCBAs or PWBAs. This role ensures products are inspected in accordance with customer requirements, IPC standards, regulatory requirements, engineering documentation, and company procedures.
The Quality Control Supervisor provides direct leadership to Quality Control Inspectors and works closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, and Quality Assurance teams to maintain product quality, drive process compliance, support customer requirements, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise daily quality control inspection activities for surface mount, through-hole, mixed-technology, polymerics, conformal coating, staking, and electromechanical assemblies.
Ensure inspections are performed in accordance with customer requirements, engineering documentation, IPC standards, work instructions, drawings, specifications, BOMs, and company procedures.
Lead, train, coach, and evaluate Quality Control Inspectors to ensure competency, consistency, and compliance with inspection requirements.
Assign inspection priorities, personnel, and resources to support production schedules, customer delivery requirements, and changing manufacturing priorities.
Review and approve inspection documentation, nonconformance reports, defect records, and other quality records for accuracy and completeness.
Support root cause investigations, corrective actions, containment activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Program Management to resolve quality issues and improve process performance.
Monitor inspection findings, defect trends, rework activity, and quality performance metrics to identify opportunities for improvement.
Escalate significant quality concerns, recurring defects, documentation issues, or process noncompliance to appropriate leadership.
Support internal, customer, regulatory, and third-party audits by providing records, objective evidence, and inspection process support as required.
Ensure inspection tools, equipment, microscopes, gauges, and measuring devices are properly maintained, controlled, and calibrated.
Enforce compliance with ESD controls, safety requirements, quality system procedures, and company policies.
Support the development, review, and improvement of inspection procedures, work instructions, training materials, and quality documentation.
Promote a culture of accountability, workmanship, quality awareness, and continuous improvement within the inspection team.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED required.
Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent electronics manufacturing experience preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of electronics manufacturing inspection experience required, preferably in a high-reliability, aerospace, defense, medical, or Class 3 manufacturing environment.
Previous leadership, lead inspector, or supervisory experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of IPC-A-610 Class 2 and Class 3 acceptance criteria required.
Knowledge of J-STD-001 requirements preferred.
Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with polymerics, conformal coating, staking, masking, underfill, and related post-assembly inspection processes.
Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, and customer-specific quality requirements preferred.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, BOMs, manufacturing documentation, customer requirements, and assembly instructions.
Experience reviewing inspection records, nonconformance reports, quality documentation, and objective evidence.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.
Experience using ERP, MES, quality management, or manufacturing tracking systems preferred.
Strong communication, organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to prioritize work, support production demands, and make sound quality decisions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Program Management, and Customer Quality representatives.
Preferred Experience
Experience in PCBA manufacturing supporting aerospace, defense, space, or other high-reliability customers.
Experience supervising inspection teams in an ESD-controlled electronics manufacturing environment.
Experience with conformal coating inspection, staking inspection, polymerics inspection, and post-coating quality control.
Experience supporting customer audits, AS9100 audits, internal audits, and corrective action activities.
IPC-A-610 certification or Certified IPC Specialist certification preferred.
J-STD-001 certification preferred.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the manufacturing floor as needed.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Requires close visual acuity for inspection, microscope work, documentation review, and computer work.
Must be able to work in an ESD-controlled manufacturing environment.
Must be able to wear required PPE, including ESD smock, safety glasses, gloves, and other protective equipment as required.
May require extended periods of standing or sitting depending on inspection and production needs.
Occasional overtime, weekend work, or schedule flexibility may be required to support production schedules, customer requirements, and business needs.
Work Environment
This position operates in a PCBA manufacturing environment with exposure to standard electronics production equipment, inspection tools, microscopes, chemicals used in controlled manufacturing processes, ESD controls, and production floor activity. The role requires regular interaction with inspection personnel, production operators, engineering staff, quality personnel, and leadership.
