POSITION TITLE: Licensed Professional Counselor
EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Coordinator of Behavior Support Services
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Primary Purpose
Provide counseling services to students as identified by the individual campus, referral process and communicate and collaborate with staff, campus staff, and parents as appropriate.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, or School Psychology
Valid Texas license as a licensed professional counselor, licensed professional associate, or licensed specialist
in school psychology granted by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists or Texas State Board of
Examiners of Professional Counselors
Special Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of various counseling techniques and counseling models
Ability to individualize counseling to meet students’ unique needs
Knowledge of the special education admission, review, and dismissal process
Knowledge of the psychological and social development of children
Strong consultation skills for conferencing with students, staff, and parents
Strong organizational, communication (verbal and written), and interpersonal skills
Experience
One year experience providing counseling services in an educational setting
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Assessment
- Participate in admission, review, and dismissal committee meetings to assist with appropriate counseling services and development of the individual education plan, according to District procedures.
- Provide counseling services to students as specified in the student’s ARD meeting.
- Develop counseling reports when requested by the ARD committee.
- Update counseling goals and develop new goals in ARD meetings
Consultation
- Assist staff with crisis calls and intervention
- Collaborate and consult with campus staff, outside agencies, and parents regarding students’ needs and progress.
Program Management
- Develop and coordinate continuing evaluations of services provided to students and adjust based on findings.
- Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents.
- Comply with District, department, and campus routines and procedures.
- Comply with federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in the areas of counseling services, assessment, placement, and planning for special education services.
Communication and Community Relations
- Collaborate, effectively communicate, and maintain a positive relationship with campus staff, colleagues, supervisors, students, and parents.
- Meet and communicate with parents to discuss pertinent information regarding the student.
- Model positive and appropriate behavior for students and staff, and demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of counseling services.
- Maintain strict confidentiality.
Professional Growth and Learning
- Participate in professional learning activities to improve skills appropriate to job assignment.
- Maintain familiarity with district initiatives and curriculum to better serve students’ needs.
