Learning & Development Manager

The Impact You'll Make in this Role
As the Learning & Development Manager, you will lead the Zoo's learning strategy by designing, delivering, and evaluating training programs that develop employee capabilities, strengthen leadership, ensure regulatory compliance, and support exceptional guest experiences. You will partner with leaders across the organization to identify development needs, build career pathways, and create learning solutions that align with the Zoo's mission and strategic goals.
As a Learning & Development Manager, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people in San Antonio. Here, you will make an impact by:
- Develop and execute the Zoo's learning and development strategy aligned with organizational goals.
- Plan, facilitate, and evaluate instructor-led and virtual learning experiences, serving as the organization's lead facilitator while coaching department leaders and subject matter experts to effectively deliver training that promotes knowledge transfer, employee engagement, and performance improvement.
- Conduct training needs assessments and collaborate with leaders to identify skills gaps and development opportunities.
- Design and deliver engaging instructor-led, virtual, e-learning, and blended training programs using adult learning principles.
- Develop learning materials, facilitator guides, assessments, and supporting resources while maintaining quality and consistency.
Leadership Development & Employee Growth
- Design and facilitate leadership development programs for supervisors, managers, and emerging leaders.
- Create development pathways that support employee growth, succession planning, and internal career mobility.
- Provide coaching and development resources that strengthen leadership effectiveness and team performance.
Onboarding & Compliance Training
- Oversee the organization's onboarding program to provide a consistent and engaging new hire experience.
- Coordinate department-specific onboarding in partnership with hiring managers and subject matter experts.
- Administer required compliance training and maintain accurate, audit-ready training records.
- Monitor training completion and provide compliance reporting to organizational leadership.
Learning Systems & Program Evaluation
- Serve as administrator for the Learning Management System (LMS), including course management, reporting, user support, and system maintenance.
- Develop dashboards and reports that measure participation, completion, learning effectiveness, and organizational impact.
- Evaluate training programs using established performance metrics and continuously improve learning initiatives based on data and feedback.
Partnership & Administration
- Collaborate with Human Resources and department leaders to align learning initiatives with workforce planning and organizational priorities.
- Manage external training vendors, facilitators, and learning resources.
- Support special projects and other Human Resources initiatives as assigned.
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, the San Antonio Zoo recommends the following skills and qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Education, Business, Instructional Design, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Five years of progressively responsible experience in Learning & Development, Training, Organizational Development, or a related field.
- Experience designing and delivering training programs for a diverse workforce.
- Strong knowledge of instructional design methodologies and adult learning principles.
- Experience administering Learning Management Systems (LMS) and learning technologies.
- Excellent facilitation, presentation, and communication skills.
- Strong project management, organization, and relationship-building skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional certification such as CPTD, SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP, PHR/SPHR, or other related credentialing.
- Experience with HRIS systems, preferably UKG.
- Experience designing leadership development programs and competency frameworks.
- Experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) training experience is preferred.
