South Piedmont Community College is seeking qualified, part-time instructors to teach in its Fire and Rescue continuing education program, within the Career and Workforce Development division. Instructors delivers classroom (didactic), manipulative/practical-skills (psychomotor), and live-evolution or field instruction in certification, in-service, refresher, and continuing education courses for firefighters and rescue personnel, in accordance with North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal ( OSFM ) and North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission standards and the applicable NFPA professional qualification standards.
Instructors are responsible for fostering student learning, evaluating student competency across the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains, and supporting the program’s mission to prepare students for state certification and safe, effective performance in the fire and rescue service.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Working knowledge of current fire and rescue practices, fireground operations, and applicable NFPA standards.
- Ability to evaluate student performance objectively across all learning domains.
- Strong organizational, classroom-management, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, college staff, partner agencies, and host departments from diverse backgrounds.
- Commitment to student success, fireground safety, and continuous program improvement.
Essential Duties Summary
- Teach assigned fire and rescue courses at the certified level (didactic, practical-skills, live-evolution, and/or field) following the approved curriculum, course outline, and schedule.
- Prepare and deliver instruction using a variety of teaching methods appropriate to adult learners and the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective objectives of each course.
- Set up, operate, and maintain training props, apparatus, SCBA , PPE , manikins, simulation tools, and training-ground equipment; ensure equipment is inspected, accounted for, and returned in working order.
- Assess and document student performance through written examinations, manipulative-skills evaluations, and practical-evolution competency verification; maintain accurate and timely records.
- Provide remediation and constructive feedback to support student success and competency attainment.
- Maintain a safe, professional, and inclusive learning environment; enforce program safety, accountability, and personnel-protection standards, including NFPA 1403 for all live fire training evolutions.
- Communicate regularly with the Program Director and lead instructor(s) regarding student progress, scheduling, equipment, and program needs.
- Comply with all college policies, North Carolina OSFM and Fire and Rescue Commission rules and certification standards, FERPA , and applicable host-agency and training-site requirements.
- Participate in instructor workshops, course-coordination meetings, and continuing education as required to maintain credentials.
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current North Carolina Fire Instructor I certification (NC OSFM / North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission).
- Active member in good standing of a recognized North Carolina fire department.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a certified firefighter with a recognized fire department.
- Current CPR certification.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and willingness to learn the college’s learning management system ( LMS ).
In addition to the minimum qualifications above, adjuncts assigned to specialized disciplines must hold the corresponding instructor credential for the instruction delivered:
- Live Fire Training: Instructors assigned to live fire training evolutions must hold a current Live Fire Instructor credential and conduct all live fire training in full compliance with NFPA 1403.
- Technical Rescue: Instructors assigned to technical rescue disciplines must hold the corresponding Technical Rescue Instructor credential for the rescue discipline being taught.
- North Carolina Fire Instructor II certification, including completion of the Instructor II Indoctrination Class.
- Technical Rescue Instructor certification.
- Live Fire Instructor certification.
- Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- North Carolina Fire Instructor III certification.
- Prior teaching experience at a community college, regional training center, or fire academy.
- Online or hybrid teaching experience.
- Current, active fireground experience in the delivery of structural firefighting or rescue operations.
- Additional fire/rescue certifications relevant to assigned courses (e.g., Fire Officer, Driver/Operator, Hazardous Materials, Rescue Technician).
- Ability to demonstrate and evaluate physically demanding fire and rescue skills, including lifting, carrying, dragging, and operating equipment and hose (up to 50+ lbs), advancing lines, climbing and raising ladders, and performing skills while wearing full structural PPE and self-contained breathing apparatus ( SCBA ).
- May involve exposure to heat, products of combustion, controlled live fire and training-ground environments, elevated and confined work areas, and varied weather conditions; adherence to established safety standards and standard precautions is required.
- Schedule may include days, evenings, weekends, and off-site locations depending on course assignment.
