Position Overview
The Biology Department at South Plains College supports the college’s mission to improve each student’s life by providing high-quality, student-focused instruction in the biological sciences. The department prepares students for transfer, health science programs, workforce pathways, and continued academic success through clear instruction, academic support, and meaningful learning experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Biology Instructor teaches undergraduate Biology courses, with a primary assignment in Anatomy & Physiology lecture and lab. Responsibilities include planning instruction, assessing student learning, maintaining records, supporting course improvement, and participating in department and college service. Other duties may be assigned in accordance with college policy and the Faculty Handbook.
- Teach Anatomy & Physiology lecture and laboratory courses within the prescribed curriculum.
- Design and facilitate learning experiences aligned with course outcomes, assessments, and departmental expectations.
- Use instructional strategies that promote student engagement, critical thinking, and application of course concepts.
- Support effective lab instruction through appropriate use of models, specimens, supplies, and equipment.
- Connect lecture and lab instruction to support student understanding of structure and function.
- Prepare course materials, activities, assignments, and assessments.
- Communicate course expectations, grading procedures, and deadlines clearly.
- Evaluate student work consistently and provide timely feedback.
- Maintain scheduled office hours and accurate course records.
- Use instructional technology and the learning management system effectively.
- Follow college policies, course standards, and departmental expectations.
Departmental Responsibilities
- Participate in department meetings, planning, and course improvement efforts.
- Assist with curriculum review and departmental assessment.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to support consistent Biology instruction and a collegial department environment.
- Support student success through advising, academic support, and appropriate referrals.
- Participate in the performance appraisal process.
College Responsibilities
- Support the mission, goals, policies, and procedures of South Plains College.
- Meet professional assignments in accordance with the college calendar and contractual obligations.
- Participate in professional development, committees, and college activities as assigned.
- Contribute to planning, scheduling, assessment, and budget processes as appropriate.
- Work collaboratively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community members.
- Support student organizations, mentoring, or campus activities as appropriate.
Qualifications
Required:
Must meet South Plains College and SACSCOC faculty credentialing requirements for teaching undergraduate Anatomy & Physiology courses. Appropriate qualifications may be demonstrated through a combination of the following:
- A graduate or professional degree in biology, anatomy & physiology, biomedical sciences, medicine, veterinary medicine, or a closely related biological or health science field.
- Graduate coursework, typically including at least 18 graduate semester hours, in biology, biological sciences, anatomy & physiology, or a closely related biological science discipline.
- Documented research experience, clinical experience, peer-reviewed publications, or related preparation appropriate to Anatomy & Physiology instruction.
Additional factors that would strengthen an application:
- College teaching experience.
- Experience teaching Anatomy & Physiology lecture and/or lab.
- Experience with lab instruction, instructional technology, advising, assessment, or curriculum development.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision.
Work Environment
Ability to work with different groups of people and interact in a professional manner with staff and co-workers. Must follow rules and guidelines as presented in the Faculty handbook.
