Description
The School of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale) invites applications for a 75% FTE Assistant Professor of Practice position in Industrial Design. The successful candidate will support the Design program by teaching Industrial Design courses and by preparing students for industry success. Ideal applicants will bring both professional experience and teaching capabilities in industrial design. In addition to teaching, the position requires hands-on rapid prototyping and supervision of the shop/labs. Candidates with experience in rapid prototyping, digital fabrication, and shop operations are strongly encouraged to apply. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment, overseeing student use of fabrication spaces, and supporting safe, effective learning environments.
Due to the newly established $100,000 fee for H-1B petitions requesting consular processing outside of the U.S., Southern Illinois University is unable to provide H-1B sponsorship at this time for any prospective applicant who is outside of the U.S. and requires consular processing.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.

Examples of Duties
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate industrial design courses. This includes holding office hours, grading, and submission of final grades.
- Develop and implement course materials that prepare students for subsequent courses in the design curriculum.
- Supervise the SAM Lab, including responsibilities for rapid prototyping equipment, tool maintenance, equipment upkeep, and general workspace organization.
- Supervise the Design Shop, including the design wood shop, design metal shop, paint booth, CNC, clean assembly room equipment, and other shop equipment.
- Provide safety training for students and monitor proper equipment use.
- Participate in Design Portfolio Evaluation and occasional program planning or recruitment activities.
- Serve on the School, College or University Committees as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must meet one of the following:
- A terminal degree in a design-related discipline. (e.g., Ph.D. in Design, MFA in Industrial Design, MDes or MS in Industrial Design, or closely related field) by time of hire.
- A BFA or BA degree with a specialization in Industrial Design plus a minimum of 5 years of professional industry experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior college-level teaching experience.
- Professional experience in industrial design practice.
- Experience with rapid prototyping, shop operations, or digital fabrication workflows.
