About the Position:
This role is an on-campus, in-person position.
The Assistant Director provides training, development, advice, and support for the individual members, chapters, councils, advisors and inter/national organizations of the SMU fraternity & sorority community with specific advisement to the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC). This position supports initiatives that benefit the entire community, including event planning, training and development, and advice and support for SMU students and the fraternity and sorority community, while providing customized care for MGC and NPHC organizations. The Assistant Director is a member of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) within the Division of Student Affairs and works in service of the departmental mission, and divisional strategic plan.
Essential Functions:
Advise and mentor the executive boards, chapter leaders, and members of the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), providing personalized, culturally responsive guidance that supports organizational effectiveness, leadership development, and student success.
Cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with alumni volunteers, (inter)national headquarters staff, traveling consultants, campus partners, and community stakeholders to strengthen chapter operations, support student development, and advance organizational goals.
Coordinate and oversee formal and informal recruitment and membership intake processes for MGC and NPHC organizations, ensuring compliance with university policies, council procedures, and (inter)national organizational expectations.
Develop and implement initiatives that strengthen MGC and NPHC council operations by promoting chapter sustainability, enhancing student engagement and belonging, supporting membership growth, fostering organizational accountability, and advancing collaboration across the university.
Develop and manage the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life's social media and marketing strategy, elevating the visibility of the office, governing councils, and fraternity and sorority community through compelling storytelling and strategic communications.
Serve as an active and engaged member of the Fraternity & Sorority Life team and support the department mission. Support the implementation and realization of the student affairs division mission and strategic plan.
Other duties as assigned.
Hours of work will be beyond the typical 8:30 – 5 p.m. work day. Responsiveness is critical and necessary, and could be evening and weekend time frames given the responsibilities of the position. The AD regularly works after traditional business hours on weekdays and occasionally on weekends. Minimal traval may be required.
Education and Experience:
Master’s is required, preferably in higher education, student affairs or related field.
A minimum of 3 years of experience working in higher education and experience advising fraternities or sororities is required. A working knowledge of chapter, campus and national fraternity/sorority affairs is essential.
Active membership in an inter/national fraternity or sorority is highly preferred. Experience working with diverse populations is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.
Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise creative solutions. Candidate must have well developed organizational skills that include effective planning and time management and must have strong attention to detail.
Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office suite and experience with CampusGroups and other recruitment registration software is preferred.
