Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
The Nurse Manager is responsible for the oversight of daily nursing operations within assigned behavioral health units. This role ensures the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centered care while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. The Nurse Manager supervises nursing staff, supports clinical excellence, and promotes a therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Clinical Operations & Patient Care
- Oversee day-to-day nursing operations within assigned units
- Ensure delivery of safe, therapeutic, and evidence-based behavioral health care
- Monitor patient care activities to ensure compliance with hospital policies and standards
- Participate in patient rounds and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
- Address and resolve patient care concerns and incidents
- Collaborate with the Director of Nursing on strategic and operational goals
- Assist with budget management, staffing plans, and resource allocation
- Lead unit meetings and communicate organizational updates
- Participate in policy development and implementation
- Serve as a liaison between nursing staff and leadership
Staff Supervision & Development
- Supervise, coach, and evaluate nursing staff including RNs, LPNs, and Behavioral Health Technicians
- Manage staffing schedules to ensure appropriate coverage and acuity needs
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing feedback
- Identify training needs and support staff development and competencies
- Promote staff engagement and retention initiatives
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies (e.g., Joint Commission, state, CMS)
- Monitor quality indicators and implement performance improvement initiatives
- Participate in audits, inspections, and accreditation processes
- Ensure proper documentation and adherence to clinical standards
Safety & Risk Management
- Promote a safe environment for patients and staff, including crisis prevention and intervention
- Review and follow up on incident reports and implement corrective actions
- Ensure adherence to infection control and safety protocols
- Support de-escalation practices and management of aggressive behaviors
Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to ensuring the agency is adequately staffed during and immediately following natural and/or manmade disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, and/or acts of terrorism. Assists other employees in the work unit in accomplishing assignments
Qualifications
Special Qualifications/Education
Minimum Requirements:
- Licensure by the Kansas Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse.
- Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in behavioral health or healthcare setting
- Experience in staff training, education, or supervision preferred
- Strong knowledge of behavioral health patient care and safety practices
- Strong teaching, coaching, and presentation skills
- Ability to conduct hands-on, practical training in a clinical environment
- Knowledge of crisis prevention/intervention techniques (e.g., CPI or similar)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational and documentation abilities
Preferred Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- Knowledge of crisis prevention/intervention techniques (e.g., CPI or similar)
- Previous supervisory experience.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements:
- Must be able to pass a background check prior to employment.
- Must take and pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
