ABOUT US:
Downstate Health Physicians represents the faculty of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn’s only academic medical center. The position being offered is Medical Biller/ Coder for University Orthopaedic Associates medical practice. The ideal candidate would support clinical practice operations by performing a variety of administrative functions in the billing workflow. The incumbent is responsible for aiding the efficiency of day-to-day billing operations, including AR follow-up, insurance verification, authorizations, coding verification, and other key functions. The Medical Biller/ Coder maintains an environment of service excellence and respect within the office and is responsible for providing a first-class experience to patients and insurance representatives within the office setting.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Reviews charge information to ensure accuracy per payer requirements; makes corrections as needed
- Manages services in progress and updates to accounts receivable (AR) once items are delivered, maintaining AR levels over 120 days at or below targeted level
- Responsible for reviewing claim edits and resolving them, working claim rejections and denials, performing voids and corrections as necessary
- Responsible for submitting clean and accurate claims; accurate review of patient chart required elements
- Timely completion of all assigned tasks
- Generating reports to ensure that claims are processed within timely filing limits. Will also run claim edit metrics to determine the type of edit issues that are recurring to aid in future training
- May place calls or send messages to those with unresolved billing issues
- Organizing claim worklists given to the incumbent
- Reviewing claims for coding accuracy and providing coding recommendations to clinicians
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- One (1) year work experience with medical billing in private practice or hospital setting
- Experience working with insurances and obtaining authorizations
- Strong phone and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer skills including typing, knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Athena EHR software preferred
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- Active coding certification and orthopaedic coding experience preferred
