Job Description:
Job Title: Treatment RN
Reports to: Director of Clinical Services
JOB SUMMARY: The Chemotherapy Registered Nurse is responsible for providing safe, compassionate, and expert nursing care to patients receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biologics, and supportive infusion treatments. The Chemo RN performs focused patient assessments, administers complex IV therapies, monitors for adverse reactions, educates patients and families, and collaborates closely with oncologists and the interdisciplinary team. This role requires specialized oncology knowledge, strong critical-thinking skills, and strict adherence to evidence-based chemotherapy safety standards.
Supervision received: General supervision by the Director of Clinical Services.
Supervision performed: Treatment and triage Medical Assistants.
Essential Duties
Chemotherapy and Infusion Administration
Administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and related IV medications in accordance with provider orders and evidence-based protocols. Verify chemotherapy orders, doses, and calculations following institutional safety policies (e.g., double-checks, protocol verification). Access, de-access, and manage central lines and peripheral IVs. Monitor patients closely during and after infusions for hypersensitivity, anaphylaxis, or other adverse reactions. Manage infusion-related complications promptly using clinical judgment and emergency protocols.
Patient Assessment and Support
- Perform focused pre-treatment assessments, including vital signs, lab review, symptom evaluation, and treatment appropriateness.
- Identify changes in patient status and communicate significant findings to the Clinic RN and Physician.
- Provide emotional support and education about treatment plans, side effects, symptom management, and self-care strategies.
- Educate patients on infection prevention, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia precautions, and when to seek urgent care.
Treatment Coordination and Documentation
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of assessments, medications, reactions, and interventions in the EHR.
- Review lab values, diagnostic results, and pre-medication requirements before initiating treatment.
- Assist with scheduling and patient flow to maintain an efficient and patient-centered infusion environment.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow OSHA, USP Guidelines, ONS/ONCC, and facility standards for handling hazardous drugs and PPE.
- Maintain a safe environment for both patients and staff by adhering to infection control and hazardous waste disposal guidelines.
- Maintain chemotherapy competency and annual reassessments as required.
Qualifications: Current RN license by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners or a Compact RN license until residency is established and a Texas license can be obtained. Preferred 1-3 years of oncology infusion or ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Certification
Special requirements or skills required
Ability to communicate well with physicians, staff, and patients. Good phlebotomy, venous access, organizational and time management skills required. Basic computer skills required.
