Under general supervision, overhauls, repairs and maintains different types of gasoline and diesel powered automotive equipment, ranging from trucks to earthmoving equipment; may prepare and paint automobiles, trucks and a variety of their mechanical equipment; may repair damaged automobiles and equipment bodies by performing the following duties.Job Description
All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion or initial hiring into a DOT/safety-sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or require a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County.
- Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and related parts including valves, pistons, brakes, main bearing assemblies, cooling, ignition and fuel systems of gasoline and diesel powered engines of vehicles, such as trucks and earthmoving equipment.
- Repair and overhaul transmissions, differential, front and rear end assemblies, air compressors, hydraulic systems and other specialized related equipment.
- Perform welding work incidental to completion of repair assignments.
- May repair damaged automobile, truck or construction equipment bodies, using specialized body repair tools and equipment; straighten fenders on cars and trucks; removes, straightens and replaces body panels of vehicles.
- Clean and prepare surfaces of earthmoving automotive equipment using sanding equipment; apply masking tape, mixes and blends paints, enamels and shellac; apply paint with spray gun.
- Repair air conditioners and capture Freon under special requirements.
- Use electronic testing equipment for locating problems.
- May train other employees.
- Make field service calls as necessary.
- May operate heavy construction machinery or equipment.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Skill in use and operation of tools and machinery used in automotive repair, painting and body work; in preparing metal and other surfaces for painting; in record keeping and highly skilled in diesel work.
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and techniques used in repairing light and heavy duty automotive/diesel equipment; of operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines; of mechanical repair of heavy duty trucks and construction equipment; of safety precautions; of principles, methods, materials, and tools used in automotive painting and body repair; of safety rules and equipment; of departmental policies and procedures.
Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment; to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific problems; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to interpret and work from sketches and pencil diagrams; to maintain the physical stamina necessary to perform heavy manual labor.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Education equivalent to graduation from a standard four year high school or general education degree (GED) supplemented by Vo-Tech training in diesel and gas engine or auto body repair equivalent to a two year program and six years of satisfactory, full time paid employment as an all-around diesel maintenance/repair mechanic, may include auto body repair and painting work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, substituting one year of satisfactory full time paid employment for one year of the required education with a maximum substitution of two years.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before managers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid Oklahoma Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Hazmat and Tanker Endorsement.
