Job Description
The Parks and Recreation Department has a full-time opening for a Park Operations Technician I or II. Applicants will be considered for I or II based on Level Minimum Qualifications listed under Minimum Required Education and Experience below.
Position OverviewPerforms semiskilled work in a variety of parks maintenance and repair assignments for parks and grounds areas, facility and equipment, and related work as required. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Park Operations Manager.
Essential Duties of the Position
The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.
- Edges athletic fields and other common maintenance to athletic fields; prepares athletic fields for playing; marks lines; grades fields and ditches; lays sod and top-dresses ball fields, common grounds and turf areas.
- Performs general custodial duties; sweeps and mops facilities; cleans restrooms; picks up and removes trash and litter; assists in maintaining gymnasium floor.
- Inspects playground equipment to ensure items are hazard-free and operating safely.
- Applies pesticides and weed killer.
- Leaf-blows paths and green spaces; trims trees and shrubs, plants, flowers; spreads mulch.
- Repairs fences as needed.
- Assists in the repair and maintenance of basic plumbing fixtures, minor electrical and heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, and irrigation systems.
- Sets up and breaks down for events.
- Assists with concrete and asphalt installation and repairs.
- May operate or tow heavy machinery including golf carts, tractors, mowers, lifts, and forklifts.
- Performs general maintenance duties including painting objects, buildings, dugouts, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Required Education and Experience
Level I:
- Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and some experience in the performance of maintenance and repair work. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position.
- Certifications and Licenses: Possession of valid North Carolina driver’s license. Possession of or ability to obtain first aid, CPR, and AED certifications within 12 months.
Level II:
- Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and 3 years of full-time experience in the performance of maintenance and repair work with *one division specific certification or 5 years of full-time experience in the performance of maintenance and repair work. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position.
- Certifications and Licenses: Possession of valid North Carolina driver’s license. Possession of or ability to obtain first aid, CPR, and AED certifications within 12 months. *One division specific certification required such as NC Pesticide Application License.
Knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in general maintenance and grounds keeping work and methods used in the preparation of baseball and softball fields; knowledge of materials, equipment, tools and techniques of the standard building trades; knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
Supplemental Information
This position’s physical requirements involve heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and/or walking.
Work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office with computer printers, light traffic).
