Towson University invites applications for a professional student advisor for STEM. This position provides comprehensive student-centered academic advising and support for undergraduate students in the Fisher College of Science and Mathematics. This position supports students in navigating academic programs, degree requirements, and university policies while promoting student success, retention, and timely degree completion. The advisor collaborates closely with faculty, academic departments, and campus partners to connect students with resources, coordinate support, and implement strategies that promote student development and career readiness. The advisor guides a variety of student populations including First Year Experience (FYE) students, “at risk” students who are experiencing challenges that impact degree advancement, and those who are undecided or changing undergraduate majors.
Provide accurate, individualized guidance on academic planning, including majors, minors, course selection, registration, and transfer credits.
Maintain an assigned caseload of students, including development of individualized academic plans, monitoring of academic progress, and supporting student progression toward major selection and degree completion.
Provide comprehensive advising on degree requirements, curriculum pathways, course sequencing, and progress towards graduation in alignment with program requirements.
Refer students to appropriate campus offices including Financial Aid, Career Center, Counseling Center, and Accessibility and Disability Services when needs extend beyond advising scope.
Maintain structured appointment availability with equitable access for all students and respond to student outreach within established timelines.
Prepare for advising appointments through review of relevant student-submitted comments, student records, and prior advising summaries.
Maintain accurate and timely appointment summaries regarding student advising interactions, student records, and degree tracking within institutional systems (e.g., PeopleSoft, SSC Navigate).
Provide outreach to students with ad hoc alerts; offer intervention strategies and/or referrals to appropriate campus resources.
Identify students who have not registered for courses during the registration period; address technical, procedural, financial, or personal barriers and support re-engagement.
The work hours for this position may include evenings and weekends on an occasional basis.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
- Two years of experience in academic advising, student success, coaching, career development, student affairs, teaching, counseling, or a related field.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Student Information Systems, and other technology platforms used to support student success.
- Experience handling sensitive student information in accordance with applicable privacy regulations (e.g., FERPA) in a professional setting.
- Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships with students and colleagues.
- Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to learn new platforms/programs.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to student success.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in the STEM field or master’s degree in Advising, Student Development, Educational Administration, or related field.
- Experience using PeopleSoft, EAB Navigate Student Success Collaborative and university data systems.
- Familiarity with NACADA (National Academic Advising Association) academic advising pillars, competencies, and standards, demonstrated through professional development, membership, conference participation, or direct application in an advising role.
- Expertise in assisting diverse populations, diverse learners, and/or at-risk students.
- Ability to communicate effectively in front of large groups and to provide presentations, workshops, and outreach programs.
Targeted hiring range is $55,000 - $60,000 and full university benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 17 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and
