Summary:
The primary function of the Port Engineer is to manage all maintenance and repairs of fishing
vessels operating in the Bering Sea, Washington, and Oregon. Duties include budget
management, reporting, logistics, operational preparedness, all communication with crew
regarding vessel engineering, and assisting Engineering crew with trouble shooting of vessel
operations. Maintenance is to be performed outside active fishing seasons to alleviate
breakdowns and mechanical failure during the fishing seasons. All vessel repairs and
maintenance must follow strict adherence to US Coast Guard Regulations.
Essential functions (responsibilities, tasks, supervisory needs)

Coordinates with multiple departments to ensure all engineering operations are carried out safely and in conformance with all applicable laws and regulations.
Communicates daily with ship’s engineering crew and shore side operations.
Supports and monitors the day-to-day technical operation of vessels.
Manages vessels and ongoing projects simultaneously.
Ensures proper monitoring of vessel maintenance and repair status, identification of deficiencies, and reporting as required.
Manages budgets and schedules, contractor selection, quality assurance and contract management for all vessel repair projects.
Evaluates and initiates corrective action on emergency and causality repair of vessels.
Interfaces with regulatory agencies, design groups and shipyards.
Prepares recommendations for work, and initiates procurement of materials.
Reviews repair requests and work lists from fishing vessels with the Operations Manager and prepares a budget, plan, and scope of work to be accomplished.
Works with Chief Engineer to inspect machinery, equipment, or spaces outlined in work request, draws up job specifications, and obtains bids from contractors or shipyards to perform repairs. *Scheduling all repairs to be done by selected contractor.
Maintains contact with contractors to ensure completion of quality work at quoted cost.
Investigate machinery casualties to determine cause and advises ship's officers in methods of operation to prevent recurrence of casualty or malfunction.
Maintains records of engineering costs for each vessel such as repairs, supplies, and personnel.
Cooperates with regulatory bodies to ensure that requirements for alterations, repairs, or modifications are kept.
Partners with Operations Manager to ensure that location-specific safety lists are maintained and completed.
Works closely with Operations Manager to determine scope, budget, timelines, and the volume of work that can be done.
Position will require travel to Alaska and local shipyard for extended stays during the fishing season and during shipyard periods.
Work week is normally a 40-hour week but must be available 24/7 by phone and work weekends in time of need.
Must work with the crew and yard on the schedule they are working, could be 10hr days 6 days a week while in shipyard/drydock and while up in AK 7 days a week and 12-14 hrs a day depending on the day
This is a salaried exempt position with an annualized salary range of $111,000 to $160,000.

Minimum Requirements
Required Qualifications (education, years of experience, KSAs)
4+ years ship repair or relevant marine engineering experience
Demonstrated knowledge of vessel propulsion and auxiliary systems equipment
Preferred education and experience
Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in Marine Engineering or related field or equivalent additional experience
Ship Repair experience working with Classification Society rules (DNV or ABS)
Shipyard Competent Person Certificate preferred, or ability to complete within 6 months
24 Hour Hazwoper Certificate preferred, or ability to complete within 6 months
Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Demonstrated project management experience preferred
Technical knowledge of vessels and related equipment
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers
Work environment (includes travel/on-call):
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid
conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside
weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or
airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Physical demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use
hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently
required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch,
or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds,
frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth
perception.
