POSITION OVERVIEW:
Title: Billing Specialist I
Reports To: Billing Manager
Schedule: M-F; 8am-5pm
Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: The Billing Specialist I role is an entry level position that is responsible for the posting of all patient and insurance payments and reconciling patient accounts. The role is responsible for assisting in patient inquiries as well as research, and review on delinquent accounts. Adherence to protocols will be in accordance with HIPAA regulation requirements.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: (Will include but not limited to)
- Posting of patient and insurance payments ensuring accounts are reconciled appropriately.
- Retrieve and upload ERA files from the clearinghouse and post them to the EHR system.
- Assist with collection calls, insurance follow-up and refunds.
- Respond to basic billing inquiries from patients and insurance companies.
- Complete and maintain corrections and updating patient information.
- Analyzes and summarizes all insurance denials ensuring information is distributed to appropriate staff.
- Be familiar with the aims and objectives of the Health Center and express a genuine enthusiasm for its success.
- Regular and consistent attendance is an essential function of this position.
- The ability to appropriately and professionally interact with and work well with others is an essential function of this position.
- Excellent customer service skills, including good communication and strong interpersonal skills.
- Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED.
- 1-2 years of front office or healthcare billing experience.
- Basic understanding of Medi-Cal billing and coding.
- Experience with and the ability to operate Microsoft Office software
is required.
- Experience working with EHR software is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Must possess sufficient written and verbal communication skills to
be able to interact with Medi-Cal professionals, patients, and peers
in a professional manner.
- Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality and handle
sensitive matters with discretion and tact.
- Must have a general knowledge of and the ability to maintain HIPAA
privacy requirements and sign a confidentiality agreement.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Walking, standing, and sitting for prolonged periods of time; climbing stairs, step-stools, ladders, etc.; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, balancing, and reaching; pushing, pulling and lifting up to 50 pounds; raising objects overhead; manual dexterity for operation of computer and phones; hearing, talking, and good verbal and written communication skills; repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and fingers; subject to outside environmental conditions of heat and cold; walking on uneven ground; operation of medium-weight equipment. This position requires the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
