Position Highlights
University Animal Care, with the University of Arizona, seeks an Animal Technician II. The incumbent will be responsible for providing daily care for a variety of research animal species and animals exposed to hazardous materials. In addition, the Animal Technician II will perform any assigned cage wash duties, such as operating complex equipment, and maintain detailed documentation of these activities. The incumbent is assigned to perform animal care duties within a designated facility and perform the required cage wash activities specific to facilities utilizing disposable caging, subject to change based on operational needs.
The Animal Technician II will work under minimal supervision with assigned general expectations. Please note, the work schedule includes participation in the Animal Care holiday rotation schedule, weekends, and may include compensated overtime.
University Animal Care (UAC) manages multiple centralized animal facilities at the University of Arizona and oversees the campus wide animal care and use program. UAC provides assistance to scientists, physicians, staff, and students who have received Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) approval to perform research, testing, or educational studies on animal subjects. UAC ensures humane and appropriate animal care and use by providing for the animals daily needs, veterinary care, and monitoring the use of the animals by principal investigators, technical personnel, and students. UAC is devoted to maintaining a safe environment that minimizes the risk of disease or injury to the animals and the personnel who work with them. UAC maintains accreditation by AAALAC International, the gold standard for animal care and use programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
Provides care to laboratory rodents; feed, water, changing cages, and health assessments on a daily basis.
Performs basic breeding colony tasks, such as separating breeders and weaning litters.
Administers treatments to animals as prescribed by Veterinarians.
Assists in the training of new and existing employees in routine animal care procedures.
Performs cage wash duties, bagging and consolidation of caging for recycle, trash removal, disinfection of carts/racks.
Sets up clean caging for use in rooms and stocks store room, etc.
Completes necessary documentation daily such as:
Notifications to the investigators about weans, arriving animals, animal deaths, etc.
Notifications to Vet Services requesting sick animal be examined.
Notifications to their managers regarding room issues, rack issues, and flooded cages.
Fills out cage card for weaned or split cages and turning in the strips for processing.
Fills out the information on the bags of dead animals.
Submits recharge information to business office.
Submits maintenance requests.
Fills out the Environmental Assessment sheet for each room they go in: humidity (high, low, current), temperature (high, low, current), time in and out of room, lighting and light timer assessments, number of AERFs submitted, number of animals found dead, information about flooded cages, number of cages, or cage components changed, other work performed in room, airflow checks, sanitation work done, what types of notifications set, animal/room observations, what type of notifications were sent.

Knowledge and skills necessary to be proficient in all aspects of job.
Ability to perform work that requires continuous bending ,stooping, twisting, standing and walking.
Ability to perform repetitive hand motion (changing cages).
Ability to be medically cleared to wear a respirator.
