Summary:
The primary function of the Assistant Sports Performance Coach, working under the supervision of Director of Sports Performance, for assigned intercollegiate athletic teams at the University of Illinois Springfield is to instruct student-athletes on safe and effective exercises, speed development, change of direction skills, and conditioning for enhancing athletic ability and injury prevention.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Comprehensive strength and conditioning program design for student-athletes as assigned by the Director of Strength and Conditioning.
- Detailed instruction and education to execute all training exercises safely and correctly specific to performance enhancement methods to achieve desired results.
- Testing and evaluation of student-athletes to effectively monitor desired training outcomes.
- Work directly with athletic training staff regarding student-athlete welfare such as daily injury reports, musculoskeletal examinations, and safety and equipment recommendations.
- Promote commitment, teamwork, work collaboratively, and build quality, working relationships with administration, coaches, student-athletes, University staff, business vendors, and stakeholders.
- Support recommendations set forth by athletics department designated registered dietician for good nutrition and supplementation for the health and performance of the student-athletes.
- Strategic scheduling for effective and efficient use of facilities by teams.
- Accountable for compliance with NCAA Division II and Great Lakes Valley Conference rules and regulations, University of Illinois policies and procedures, and Federal and State of Illinois laws.
- Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics, Director of Sports Performance, and/or Director of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, sport management, kinesiology, recreation or related field required.
Candidates should hold or be pursuing a National Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association’s Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association’s Strength and Conditioning Coach Certification (SCCC) are required. CPR/First Aid certification. Evening and weekend work required as necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous collegiate experience working with strength and conditioning for student-athletes preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Strong professionalism, communication skills, and leadership skills.
Ability to motivate student-athletes to perform to their optimal level.
Ability to work successfully with a diverse campus community.
