Under the general direction of the Parks Manager/Foreman, the Park Maintenance I is responsible for performance of all turf and landscape maintenance, athletic fields, playgrounds, outdoor facility maintenance and special event support and safety inspections.
REPORTS TO: Parks Foreman
QUALIFICATIONS
A high school degree and a minimum of two years’ experience in a similar position is preferred. A valid Illinois State Drivers License (class C) is required, with safe driving record.
- A Valid Illinois Pesticide Operators License is required within six months.
- CPR and AED Certification required within six months of employment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operate Park District trucks, tractors, mowers, blowers, trimmers, tractors, overseeders, chain saws, bed edger, hand and power tools.
- Building and restroom cleaning.
- Refuse and garbage removal for parks and playgrounds.
- Provide for turf care in parks - seeding, fertilization and aeration.
- Mow, edge and trim parks, blow off paved surfaces upon completion.
- Provide tree and shrub care in parks including trimming/pruning, removal, planting, removal of dead and broken branches and chipping limbs for disposal.
- Apply pesticides for weed control.
- Complete work order repairs as assigned
- Complete inspections as assigned
- Lay-out and line sports fields.
- Maintain path surfaces with chips and asphalt patch, etc.
- Provide for snow and ice removal from paths, walks, drives.
- Work special events as assigned.
- Repair and/or paint park equipment, playgrounds, facilities, signs, asphalt, and District property.
- Make and maintain ice rinks.
- Recycle appropriate materials.
- Responsible for upkeep of Park District equipment and tools.
- Able to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day and work on weekends.
- Identify and notify supervisors of hazards in parks.
- Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the District’s Risk Management Policy.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers through oral and written communications. Respond to internal and external phone calls, e-mails, comments and suggestions in a timely manner. Promote District to patrons, guests and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
SAFETY AND RISK MANAGEMENT
- Maintains a working knowledge of all general agency and departmental-specific safety rules.
- Uses material handling equipment or staff assistance when lifting and or moving objects 50 pounds or heavier.
- Reports any work-related or patron injuries to supervisor promptly, same day the injury occurs and before leaving work for the day.
- Attends required safety program and in-service education meetings.
- Corrects unsafe conditions and/or reports them to supervisor.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Worker must work closely with co-workers.
- Worker must work around general population/park patrons in public areas.
- Worker must work under supervision and direction of superiors.
- If offered the position, the applicant will be required to complete the District’s Employment Application and successfully pass a physical examination, drug screening, and criminal background check.
PHYSIOLOGICAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Worker is exposed to chemicals (i.e. fertilizers, weed killers, cleaning materials).
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
- Worker is exposed to outside weather conditions with moderate noise level 90% of the time, including extreme heat and cold, snow, rain and ice.
- Protective clothing (provided by Park District) is required including earplugs, safety glasses/goggles, helmets, chaps, steel toe boots, protective gloves and overalls.
COGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONS
- Worker must be able to follow directions from supervisor with safe follow through.
- Worker must use good safety awareness and judgment, including understanding of tool manufacturer guidelines.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ACCOMMODATION
Workers are allowed and encouraged to use mechanical or manual assists for lifting above 50 lb. as a guideline. Working in teams will also allow workers to have assistance with heavier activities at various sites.
