Then Historic Preservation may be the right path for you. The Viking Group is currently seeking highly skilled Commercial Carpenters with a passion for Historic Preservation. As a growing leader in Historic Preservation and Adaptive Reuse, The Viking Group needs to add truly skilled top talent to our team for commercial redevelopment projects throughout the state. Based in Charleston, WV, The Viking Group has been reimagining historic properties since 2013.
Some of what you’ll do:
- Assess deteriorated wood, plaster, tile, and masonry conditions and develop scope-appropriate repair and replacement solutions.
- Execute custom millwork and architectural detail work from original or measured drawings.
- Restore and replicate historic windows, doors, hardwood flooring, casework, exterior trim, siding, and other structural wood elements.
- Recreate historic plaster detail by creating custom molds.
- Apply traditional joinery techniques — mortise & tenon, wooden pegs, and period-appropriate fastening.
- Collaborate with project managers, superintendents and other trades on multi-discipline historic restoration projects.
- Travel to landmark project sites throughout West Virginia.
You’ll bring:
- 5+ years of carpentry experience with strong finish carpentry skills.
- Ability to consistently produce detailed, precise work.
- Passion for redeveloping and rehabilitating historic properties.
- Ability to read, understand, and execute on blueprints and building plans without direction.
- Experience in historic restoration, window restoration, millwork, or traditional joinery (Preferred)
- Thorough understanding of period (1800 - 1950) construction methods (Preferred).
- Ability to operate equipment (Preferred)
- Must pass pre-employment drug test and background check
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, climb, bend stoop, balance, crouch and sit for extended amounts of time

The Viking Group is a commercial general contractor with a mission to revitalize historic downtown city centers through historic preservation. Our team works on buildings with historical systems not commonly found in current construction methods. Our projects include properties of all types on the National Register of Historical Places such as downtown office buildings, churches, courthouses, government buildings, and even buildings in historic residential neighborhoods .
Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
