Position Summary
Virginia Transformer is seeking a strategic and results-driven Director – Sales, Municipal & Cooperative Utilities to lead business development and sales growth across municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, public power agencies, and related utility customers throughout North America. This role will be responsible for developing and executing commercial strategies that expand Virginia Transformer's market share within the municipal and cooperative utility segments. The Director will serve as a trusted advisor to utility leadership teams, engineers, procurement professionals, and consulting firms while driving profitable growth across power transformer, substation, and grid modernization opportunities. The ideal candidate combines deep utility industry relationships with a strong understanding of transmission and distribution infrastructure, utility procurement processes, and large capital equipment sales.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a comprehensive sales strategy for municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, joint action agencies, and public power organizations.
- Drive revenue growth and market share expansion across assigned territories and customer segments.
- Build and maintain executive-level relationships with utility leaders, engineering teams, purchasing organizations, and key industry stakeholders.
- Identify, qualify, and pursue new business opportunities involving power transformers, substation equipment, grid modernization projects, and related infrastructure investments.
- Manage the complete sales cycle from prospecting through contract negotiation, award, and project handoff.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, operations, project management, and customer service teams to ensure successful project execution and customer satisfaction.
- Monitor utility capital spending plans, regulatory initiatives, grid reliability programs, and infrastructure funding opportunities.
- Participate in industry conferences, trade associations, and customer events including APPA, NRECA, regional utility associations, and state municipal power organizations.
- Develop sales forecasts, account plans, and strategic growth initiatives for key accounts.
- Maintain accurate pipeline management and opportunity tracking within CRM systems.
- Support long-term customer retention and growth through proactive account management and executive engagement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, Business, Finance, Marketing, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive sales, business development, or account management experience within the utility, power delivery, electrical equipment, or energy infrastructure industries.
- Demonstrated experience selling to municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, public power agencies, investor-owned utilities, or related organizations.
- Strong understanding of utility procurement processes, capital project planning, and grid infrastructure investment cycles.
- Experience selling power transformers, switchgear, substations, transmission and distribution equipment, electrical infrastructure, or other engineered capital equipment is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to manage large, complex sales opportunities and multi-year customer relationships.
- Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to travel extensively throughout North America.
Preferred Experience
- Existing relationships within municipal utilities, electric cooperatives, APPA, NRECA, and regional utility organizations.
- Experience working with EPC firms, utility consultants, engineering firms, and grid modernization initiatives.
- Knowledge of transmission and distribution systems, utility operations, renewable integration, and grid reliability programs.
- Experience selling custom-engineered, low-volume/high-mix electrical equipment solutions.
