Washington College is seeking a Head Men’s Basketball Coach to join our Athletics Department. This position plays a key role in supporting the College’s mission by leading all aspects of the men’s basketball program, fostering student-athlete development, and contributing to a positive, competitive, and inclusive athletics environment.
Summary:
Plans, organizes, directs, and controls duties and responsibilities of a head basketball coach with the approval of the Director of Athletics. Acts within the scope of authority and consistent with the college objectives, guidelines, policies and practices.
Essential Functions:
1. Organizes and conducts all practice sessions for the basketball team.
2. Recruits student-athletes for the basketball program.
3. Manages budget for basketball program, making requests for major purchases through the Director of Athletics.
4. Ensures institutional compliance of basketball program by adhering to all policies and procedures of the NCAA and Centennial Conference as well as all Washington College policies and procedures.
5. Monitors academic progress of basketball players through advising and referrals.
6. Works with Athletic Communication & Compliance staff regarding media relations for the basketball program.
7. Develops and maintains working relationship with other college departments, including admissions, student affairs, and the dining hall.
8. Supervises the duties of assistant coaches.
9. Responsible for developing training rules and monitoring the conduct of athletes when they are representing Washington College, both on and off campus.
10. Recommends athletes for awards.
11. Assists with the scheduling, providing of officials and transportation for intercollegiate contests for the men’s basketball program.
12. Develops and recommends budget data; authorizes expenditures in accordance with approved budget; approves budgets and expenses of subordinates. Orders equipment for annual use by the basketball team, disburses funds for meals on athletic trips and serves as supervisor for all varsity basketball functions.
13. Attends all Centennial Conference basketball meetings.
14. Assigns work study students, evaluates, schedules, etc. if necessary.
15. Works with training staff to ensure that all athletes are medically cleared to participate.
16. Works with athletic department office to ensure that all athletes meet NCAA eligibility requirements.
17. Coordinates with facility managers for game apparatus.
18. Coordinates fundraising for the men’s basketball team.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs related duties incidental to the work described herein or as assigned.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develops and recommends budget data; authorizes expenditures in accordance with approved budget; approves budgets and expenses of subordinates.
2. Oversees the activities and conduct of team members while they are representing Washington College.
3. Acts within scope of authority and consistent with College objectives, guidelines, policies, and practices.
4. For Assistant Coaching staff:
a. Develops short and long range operating objectives; reviews existing organizational structure and staffing requirements; recommends and implements changes as needed.
b. Provides appropriate supervision, including communication of clearly defined job responsibilities, adequate training and development, and provision for backup.
c. Monitors performance of staff and provides prompt and objective coaching and counseling in managerial and technical matters. Reviews and approves performance appraisals initiated by subordinates of their staff. Evaluates subordinates.
d. Assures that effective communications are maintained within areas of responsibility. Where appropriate, informs staff as to plans and progress. Conducts staff discussion sessions at regular and frequent intervals.
e. Assures that necessary coordination within the area of responsibility is occurring and that coordination of the assigned area with those of other College departments is taking place.
5. Trains and supervises work study students as necessary.
Qualifications :
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, Athletics Administration, Business Administration, or a closely related field.
- Experience: 1–3 years of experience coaching on the high school, club, or college level in basketball.
- Skills:
- Demonstrates administrative and supervisory skills.
- Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
- High energy level.
- Desire to work with young adults.
- Ability to effectively promote the college and athletic experience.
- Willingness to work weekends and night hours.
- Willingness and ability to drive van and car.
- Ability to act as a mature role model for young adults.
- Ability to recruit student-athletes.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills; ability to get along well with diverse personalities; tactful, mature, and flexible.
- Ability to deal with adversity, highs and lows.
- Positive mental attitude.
- Well organized.
- Technical: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with athletic scoreboard, audio/visual, or live-streaming systems is preferred.
- Certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license and pass a motor vehicle record check to operate university fleet vehicles.

1. Indoors in temperature-controlled environment
2. Frequent van and car driving responsibilities
3. Some outdoor exposure.
4. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during multi-hour athletic events.
WORKS SCHEDULE/HOURS:
1. Exempt status
2. 35-70 week depending on season
3. Weeknights and weekends as required
