Scope:
The Safety Manager is responsible for leading the agency's safety program by fostering a culture where safety is a shared responsibility and an integral part of every employee's daily work. This role ensures the timely identification, assessment, and mitigation of safety risks through proactive planning, policy development, training, and continuous improvement.
The Safety Manager responds promptly to workplace incidents, conducts thorough root cause analyses, implements corrective and preventive actions, and collaborates with leaders across the agency to reduce risk and prevent recurrence. Through cross-functional partnership, employee education, safety inspections, incident investigations, regulatory compliance, and ongoing communication, the Safety Manager promotes accountability, empowers staff to prioritize safety in every decision, and strengthens an agency-wide culture of prevention, preparedness, and continuous safety improvement.
Essential Functions
- Develop and execute workplace and public safety plans for the Agency.
- Prepare, implement, and enforce safety policies, procedures, and protocols that establish and sustain a culture of health, safety, and compliance.
- Evaluate agency practices, procedures, programs, and facilities to assess risk and identify opportunities for continuous improvement, organizational alignment, and regulatory compliance.
- Conduct comprehensive safety, compliance, and security risk assessments of agency facilities, operations, and programs, and develop corrective action recommendations to mitigate identified risks.
- Ensure the agency's safety-related documentation, manuals, records, postings, and procedures remain compliant with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and accreditation requirements.
- Produce and present compliance assessment reports, security risk assessments, safety audits, and corrective action plans to leadership, including tracking progress toward resolution.
- Coordinate and deliver workplace and public safety training, drills, and presentations for a multi-location, multi-functional, hybrid work environment.
- Recommend and implement solutions to safety concerns, compliance issues, operational risks, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Collect, analyze, and report agency safety data, incident trends, compliance metrics, and performance indicators to inform leadership decision-making and drive continuous improvement.
- Lead the Agency Safety Advisory Committee by facilitating meetings, establishing annual priorities, coordinating committee initiatives, and reporting outcomes and recommendations to executive leadership.
- Manage the agency's Behavioral Risk Management Process and ensure organization-wide awareness and consistent implementation.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for agency safety-related incident reporting, investigation, case management, root cause analysis, and follow-up corrective actions.
- Collaborate with agency leadership, Human Resources, Facilities, Information Technology, and program leadership to promote a proactive safety culture and reduce organizational risk.
- Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Clerical:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a professional office environment with a usually quiet noise level. This is largely a sedentary role, and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, frequently use hands, and to talk or hear.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in safety management OR a combination of education and experience that is similarly equivalent.
- Effectively handling confidential information and risk assessment.
- Knowledge of common public and workplace safety regulations and requirements.
- Strong conflict management and problem-solving skills.
- Good knowledge of data analysis and risk assessment paying attention to detail.
- Confidently establish workflows, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet required deadlines.
- Strong organizational and strategic planning skills with the ability to adapt style to a variety of situations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Minimum Competencies:
- Highly experienced in using internet applications and programs, including Google technology and Microsoft Office Word and Excel.
- The ability to quickly learn and utilize the necessary software for this position.
- Ability to provide services for those persons facing economic, social, health, age, and educational barriers.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to take decisive action.
- Ability to de-escalate highly emotional crises.
- Strong interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, and dependability.
- Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies and procedures.
Licensing and Other Requirements:
- Valid identification and reliable transportation.
Travel Requirements:
- Ability to travel to various sites.
Work Hours:
Monday through Friday, including possible evenings and weekends as determined by agency need.
