Location: Green River, WY
Role Purpose
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Director provides strategic leadership and governance for Health, Safety, and Environmental performance in US operations, ensuring safe, compliant, and sustainable execution of business activities. Acting as a senior advisor to executive leadership, the role integrates EHS into operational strategy, capital planning, and day-to-day decision-making while driving a strong, accountable safety culture.
Key Accountabilities:
Strategic Leadership & Culture
- Develop and deliver the EHS strategy aligned to business objectives, ensuring clear priorities, measurable outcomes, and visible leadership engagement.
- Drive cultural transformation by embedding accountability at all levels and ensuring leaders actively own EHS performance, not just compliance.
- Own and continuously improve EHS management systems aligned with ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 22301, ensuring consistent standards across regions and sites.
- Maintain full regulatory compliance across jurisdictions, including OSHA, EPA, MSHA, and DOT requirements in the US, supported by strong audit, reporting, and assurance processes.
- Lead enterprise-wide risk identification and assessment, with particular focus on defining and managing critical risks.
- Ensure robust implementation of control frameworks,
- Management of Change processes, and operational risk reviews, embedding prevention rather than reaction across all activities.
- Establish proactive incident prevention strategies and ensure all significant incidents and near misses are investigated using structured root cause analysis.
- Drive consistent sharing of lessons learned and ensure corrective actions are effectively implemented and sustained across the organization.
- Ensure strong operational discipline through effective safety systems, including permit-to-work, isolation, and high-risk activity controls.
- Set and enforce robust contractor management standards, ensuring third-party activities meet company and regulatory expectations
- Lead environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives, ensuring effective management of emissions, waste, and resources while supporting broader ESG commitments and continuous improvement in environmental performance.
- Build and develop high-performing EHS teams while strengthening EHS capability within operational leadership.
- Establish clear performance expectations, supported by data-driven insights, regular reporting, and benchmarking to drive continuous improvement across all sites.
Performance in this role is measured through a balanced set of outcome, compliance, and leading indicators, including:
- Zero fatalities and high-consequence injuries, with sustained reduction in high-potential incidents
- ≥97% closure of audit, inspection, and incident actions within defined timelines
- 100% regulatory compliance, with no significant enforcement actions or repeat violations
- ≥95% verification of critical risk controls and demonstrable effectiveness of key barriers
- 100% on-time regulatory and internal reporting across all sites
- Achievement of audit and assurance scores above corporate thresholds
- Measurable improvement in safety culture maturity and leadership engagement metrics
- Increased proactive indicators (observations, interventions, risk assessments) demonstrating workforce engagement
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline, supported by significant EHS experience (typically 10+ years) in manufacturing, chemicals, mining, metals, industrial processing or related heavy industry, or similarly complex environments, including multi-site or regional leadership responsibility.
- 7+ years’ experience of leadership including the ability to manage teams, drive accountability, and develop direct reports.
- A strong track record of influencing senior stakeholders, driving safety culture transformation, and delivering measurable risk reduction is essential.
- Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, NEBOSH, or equivalent are preferred, alongside the ability to operate effectively across different regulatory environments and cultural contexts.
Strategic leadership, risk management expertise, strong regulatory knowledge, and the ability to influence across a complex organization are critical.
The role requires excellent communication, sound judgement, and a proactive, improvement-focused mindset, with the ability to lead through change and manage competing priorities effectively.
