Job Title: Personal Trainer
Job Status: Part Time – Non-Exempt
Department: Park and Recreation Services
Primary Work Location: Community Recreation Center – Fitness Center
Reports To: Health & Fitness Center Manager
Supervisory Responsibility: None
Position Summary
A Personal Trainer shall oversee all aspects of training clients, including designing individualized fitness programs, providing instruction, and tracking progress to ensure clients meet their health and fitness goals. Hours will be dependent upon scheduling of client sessions, assessments, consultations, and staff meetings. The role requires strong communication skills, motivation, and a commitment to delivering a safe and effective training environment.
Essential Job Duties
- Develop, implement, and deliver personalized workout plans and training sessions that are safe, effective, engaging, and aligned with each client’s goals.
- Conduct client assessments as needed, particularly while building and maintaining a clientele base.
- Arrive prepared, greet clients professionally, and begin all sessions on time.
- Maintain accurate client records, including health history, assessments, and training progress.
- Ensure clients have purchased sessions prior to training and that sessions are used in a timely manner, limiting extensions to medically necessary situations.
- Obtain physician or physical therapist clearance when required before initiating exercise programs.
- Complete administrative tasks, including pulling training tickets from RecTrac and submitting them to management at the end of each payroll period.
- Maintain current personal training certification and participate in continuing education to stay up to date with industry standards and techniques.
- Perform job safely and in compliance with Park District policies, procedures, work, and safety rules.
- Maintain a high level of readiness and be prepared to handle any emergency situation and report any emergency situations or incidents to the supervisor immediately.
- Must wear proper attire (training jacket, proper shoes, WPD staff ID, no hats)
- Attend and be held accountable for all information presented at all mandatory staff meetings.
- Maintain positive relationships with the members and staff.
- Participates in required training and safety programs as established by the Wheeling Park District.
- Supports and exhibits the organizational values of respect, communication, integrity, innovation, recognition and appreciation, continuous learning, fun, empowerment and people.
- Performs special projects or other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Certified through national organization (ACE, AFFA, NASM, ACSM, NEIDTA) NASM preferred. Adult CPR with AED training and First Aid certificate. Prefer some college from an institution accredited by the U.S. Department of Education, especially anatomy and basic knowledge of fitness principles.
Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrate consistent attendance and on-time arrival.
- Must be able to read, write and speak in English.
- CPR/AED certification or be able to earn within 60 days.

- Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
- Specific vision abilities are required and include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
- May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

- Most activities will be performed indoors.
- Driving to other park facilities will require the worker to be outside.
- Employees may be exposed to cleaning agents and toner chemicals.
