Whitworth University is a residential campus shaped by learning, curiosity, and community life. This role is based on campus and requires consistent, in-person engagement.
Position Summary
The Part-Time Cheer Coach provides leadership for Whitworth University's cheerleading program by coaching and developing student-athletes, planning practices, choreographing routines, and preparing the team for athletic events and campus appearances. The coach recruits prospective student-athletes, builds team culture, and creates a positive, Christ-centered experience that supports the University's educational mission.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead 2 to 3 practices each week during the academic year.
- Teach proper cheerleading techniques, stunts, safety practices, and game-day performance skills.
- Design and choreograph cheers, routines, formations, and sideline performances.
- Foster teamwork, sportsmanship, accountability, and leadership among student-athletes.
- Evaluate athlete performance and provide ongoing instruction and feedback.
- Coach and supervise the team during home football and basketball games and selected postseason events.
- Coordinate performances and appearances throughout the academic year.
- Represent Whitworth Athletics at campus and community events. Events include Pirates Night, the St. Patrick's Day Parade, and the Golf Classic.
- Recruit prospective student-athletes.
- Assist with fundraising and promotional activities.
- Coordinate travel logistics for away events when applicable.
- Help cultivate a positive and competitive team culture.
Qualifications and Core Competencies
- Bachelor's degree
- One to three years of cheer coaching or related experience (equivalent experience will be considered)
- A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.
- A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
- Knowledge of collegiate cheer techniques and safety standards
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with coaches, athletic staff, students, and families
- Commitment to growing and strengthening the Whitworth Cheer program
- AACCA Certification
- USA Cheer Stunt Certification
- CPR and First Aid Certification
