Align Your Degree to MSL Expectations
Amgen's MSL postings typically require an advanced clinical or scientific degree such as a PharmD, MD, or PhD. Confirm your credential maps to the specialty area you're targeting before applying, since degree-to-role alignment directly affects H-1B specialty occupation eligibility.
Target Therapeutic Areas with Active Openings
Amgen concentrates MSL hiring around its core therapeutic franchises in oncology, cardiovascular, and inflammation. Filtering your search by these areas rather than applying broadly increases your chances of reaching a hiring team with active headcount and established sponsorship workflows.
Use Migrate Mate to Surface Sponsorship-Confirmed Roles
Search Migrate Mate to find Medical Science Liaison openings at Amgen that are filtered by visa type. This cuts out the guesswork of identifying which postings are open to international candidates before you invest time in the application.
Clarify Sponsorship Scope During Recruiter Screening
Amgen's talent acquisition team handles sponsorship decisions centrally, not at the hiring manager level. Ask directly during your first recruiter call which visa types the role supports, since MSL positions that require significant field travel can affect LCA work-site requirements under DOL rules.
Prepare for a Multi-Round Scientific Interview Process
Amgen MSL interviews typically include a scientific presentation and panel discussions with medical affairs leadership. Preparing a therapeutic area case study relevant to the franchise you're targeting signals the clinical depth they expect and strengthens your case for a sponsored offer.
Understand Your Cap-Gap Window If You're on OPT
If you're on F-1 OPT when Amgen files your H-1B, your work authorization can bridge through cap-gap until October 1 if your OPT expires between April and September. Confirm your I-20 end date with your DSO immediately after receiving an offer so there are no gaps before USCIS processing completes.

Does Amgen sponsor H-1B visas for Medical Science Liaisons?
Yes, Amgen sponsors H-1B visas for Medical Science Liaison roles. MSL positions typically qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS standards because they require at minimum a bachelor's degree, and more commonly an advanced clinical or scientific degree, in a directly related field. Sponsorship is handled centrally through Amgen's HR and legal teams rather than at the hiring manager level.
How do I apply for Medical Science Liaison jobs at Amgen?
Applications go through Amgen's careers portal, where MSL roles are listed by therapeutic area and region. You can also browse sponsorship-confirmed Medical Science Liaison openings at Amgen directly through Migrate Mate, which filters postings by visa type so you can confirm sponsorship eligibility before applying. Tailoring your application to the specific therapeutic franchise significantly improves your chances of moving to recruiter screening.
Which visa types does Amgen commonly use for Medical Science Liaison roles?
Amgen supports several visa categories for MSL positions, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and J-1 for eligible exchange visitors. For candidates seeking permanent residency, Amgen also has experience with EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship. F-1 OPT and CPT are available for eligible students and recent graduates in qualifying degree programs.
What qualifications does Amgen expect for Medical Science Liaison positions?
Amgen's MSL roles consistently require an advanced degree such as a PharmD, MD, PhD, or equivalent in a life sciences field directly relevant to the therapeutic area. Most postings also expect prior clinical, research, or field medical experience. Strong scientific communication skills and the ability to engage with key opinion leaders and healthcare professionals in a compliant, evidence-based manner are core requirements across all MSL levels.
How long does the visa sponsorship process typically take for an Amgen MSL offer?
After an offer is accepted, Amgen's legal team prepares and files the H-1B or applicable visa petition. Standard USCIS processing for an H-1B can take three to six months, while premium processing reduces this to roughly two to three weeks. For candidates already in the U.S. on a qualifying status, a change of status petition can run concurrently with your start date planning, though petitions must be filed ahead of your current status expiration.
