INTRODUCTION
Dive in and do the best work of your career at DigitalOcean. Journey alongside a strong community of top talent who are relentless in their drive to build the simplest scalable cloud. If you have a growth mindset, naturally like to think big and bold, and are energized by the fast-paced environment of a true industry disruptor, you'll find your place here. We value winning together—while learning, having fun, and making a profound difference for the dreamers and builders in the world.
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer (IC3) to join our Customer Trust & Engineering team working on Identity and Access Management. IAM is the bedrock of trust at DigitalOcean; our services sit in the critical path of every request, authorizing billions of transactions per second with single-digit millisecond latency.
In this role, you won't just maintain existing systems—you will architect the next generation of our Identity platform. You will be instrumental in supporting our AI initiatives, building seamless SSO integrations for global partners, and evolving our policy engine to support complex, agentic workflows. If you are passionate about distributed systems, security-first engineering, and building at hyperscale, this is the team for you.
- Architect for Scale: Design and develop high-availability, low-latency authentication and authorization services in Go that scale to handle massive load spikes across global regions.
- Drive Next-Gen Innovation: Build the IAM foundations for emerging cloud-native AI/ML platforms, designing secure token exchange patterns and identity context injection for agentic AI workflows.
- Modernize Identity: Lead the implementation of OIDC and SAML integrations, enabling seamless federated Single Sign-On (SSO) for enterprise customers and strategic global partners.
- Solve Complex AuthZ: Evolve our Policy Engine (using industry standards like Rego/OPA) to support advanced resource-level permissions, dynamic scoping, and network-aware access conditions.
- Evolve Identity Models: Design and scale robust, multi-tenant data models to manage complex hierarchical structures (users, teams, organizations, and resource boundaries) that map to enterprise customer needs.
- Operational Excellence: Take ownership of service reliability, from fine-tuning Kubernetes deployments to migrating legacy data pipelines to modern eventing architectures.
- Security First: Proactively identify and remediate complex security vulnerabilities, ensuring our auth flows are resilient against credential stuffing, session hijacking, and configuration theft.
- Mentor & Lead: Act as a technical lead for major workstreams, conducting deep code reviews and mentoring junior engineers in distributed systems best practices.
What You'll Add to DigitalOcean
- Experience: 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2+ years focused on Identity (AuthN/AuthZ), Security Products, or high-scale Distributed Systems.
- Language Expert: Expert-level proficiency in Go and a strong understanding of gRPC microservices architecture.
- Identity Specialist: Deep knowledge of identity protocols (OIDC, OAuth2, SAML) and access control models (RBAC, ABAC, PBAC).
- Distributed Systems Guru: Proven ability to build systems that handle consensus, replication, and partitioning at cloud scale.
- Cloud Native: Working experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes), SQL (MySQL), and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- Problem Solver: A track record of "unwinding" complex legacy logic into clean, maintainable abstractions.
- Communication: Ability to communicate technical strategy to senior leadership and collaborate across teams (Inference, Billing, DOKS).
Nice to Have
- Experience with Open Policy Agent (OPA) and Rego.
- Familiarity with Cloud-native deployment strategies (Canary/Blue-Green) via Kubernetes.
Compensation Range:
- $140,800 - $176,000

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Backend Software Developer Jobs at DigitalOcean Jobs
Tailor your resume to cloud infrastructure
DigitalOcean's backend roles emphasize Go, Python, and distributed systems at scale. Frame your experience around API design, containerization, or Kubernetes rather than general software engineering, so your resume maps directly to their open requisitions.
Research DigitalOcean's LCA filings before applying
The Department of Labor's OFLC disclosure database shows which job titles DigitalOcean has filed Labor Condition Applications for. Cross-referencing those titles with their current Backend Software Developer openings tells you which roles have an active sponsorship pathway.
Surface your sponsorship need early in recruiting
DigitalOcean's recruiting team handles visa logistics centrally for technical hires. Disclosing your visa requirement at the recruiter screen, not the offer stage, prevents late-stage complications and lets the team loop in their immigration counsel from the start.
Use Migrate Mate to filter sponsoring backend roles
Identifying which DigitalOcean Backend Software Developer openings are actively tied to sponsorship takes time manually. Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship history, so you can focus your applications on roles with a documented pathway.
Prepare for USCIS specialty occupation scrutiny
Backend Software Developer roles at cloud companies sometimes draw USCIS requests for evidence around specialty occupation status. Gather documentation showing your bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field directly ties to the specific technical responsibilities in the job description.

Find Backend Software Developer at DigitalOcean JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does DigitalOcean sponsor H-1B visas for Backend Software Developers?
Yes, DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas for Backend Software Developer roles. The company has an established immigration process for technical hires and works with immigration counsel to file petitions. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions must be submitted by April 1 each year, timing your job search to secure an offer several months beforehand is critical.
How do I apply for Backend Software Developer jobs at DigitalOcean?
You can find open Backend Software Developer roles on DigitalOcean's careers site or browse verified sponsoring positions through Migrate Mate. The process typically involves an initial recruiter screen, technical assessments covering systems design and coding, and final-round interviews. Disclosing your visa sponsorship need during the recruiter call helps the team plan accordingly from the start.
Which visa types does DigitalOcean sponsor for Backend Software Developer roles?
DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas as the primary long-term work authorization for backend engineers. The company also supports F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT for students and recent graduates, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying technical roles, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for longer-tenured employees.
What qualifications does DigitalOcean expect for Backend Software Developer roles?
DigitalOcean's backend engineering roles typically require a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, along with hands-on experience in languages such as Go or Python. Familiarity with distributed systems, REST APIs, and cloud-native infrastructure is heavily weighted. This degree-to-role alignment also matters for USCIS specialty occupation standards during H-1B adjudication.
How do I navigate the H-1B timeline when targeting DigitalOcean?
USCIS opens H-1B registration in early March each year for the lottery, with petitions filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. To hit that window, aim to secure your DigitalOcean offer by February. If you're on F-1 OPT, your employer can file during the cap-subject period and you can continue working under the cap-gap provision until your H-1B becomes effective.
