INTRODUCTION
Dive in and do the best work of your career at DigitalOcean. Journey alongside a strong community of top talent who are relentless in their drive to build the simplest scalable cloud. If you have a growth mindset, naturally like to think big and bold, and are energized by the fast-paced environment of a true industry disruptor, you'll find your place here. We value winning together—while learning, having fun, and making a profound difference for the dreamers and builders in the world.
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer (IC3) to join our Customer Trust & Engineering team working on Identity and Access Management. IAM is the bedrock of trust at DigitalOcean; our services sit in the critical path of every request, authorizing billions of transactions per second with single-digit millisecond latency.
In this role, you won't just maintain existing systems—you will architect the next generation of our Identity platform. You will be instrumental in supporting our AI initiatives, building seamless SSO integrations for global partners, and evolving our policy engine to support complex, agentic workflows. If you are passionate about distributed systems, security-first engineering, and building at hyperscale, this is the team for you.
- Architect for Scale: Design and develop high-availability, low-latency authentication and authorization services in Go that scale to handle massive load spikes across global regions.
- Drive Next-Gen Innovation: Build the IAM foundations for emerging cloud-native AI/ML platforms, designing secure token exchange patterns and identity context injection for agentic AI workflows.
- Modernize Identity: Lead the implementation of OIDC and SAML integrations, enabling seamless federated Single Sign-On (SSO) for enterprise customers and strategic global partners.
- Solve Complex AuthZ: Evolve our Policy Engine (using industry standards like Rego/OPA) to support advanced resource-level permissions, dynamic scoping, and network-aware access conditions.
- Evolve Identity Models: Design and scale robust, multi-tenant data models to manage complex hierarchical structures (users, teams, organizations, and resource boundaries) that map to enterprise customer needs.
- Operational Excellence: Take ownership of service reliability, from fine-tuning Kubernetes deployments to migrating legacy data pipelines to modern eventing architectures.
- Security First: Proactively identify and remediate complex security vulnerabilities, ensuring our auth flows are resilient against credential stuffing, session hijacking, and configuration theft.
- Mentor & Lead: Act as a technical lead for major workstreams, conducting deep code reviews and mentoring junior engineers in distributed systems best practices.
What You'll Add to DigitalOcean
- Experience: 5+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 2+ years focused on Identity (AuthN/AuthZ), Security Products, or high-scale Distributed Systems.
- Language Expert: Expert-level proficiency in Go and a strong understanding of gRPC microservices architecture.
- Identity Specialist: Deep knowledge of identity protocols (OIDC, OAuth2, SAML) and access control models (RBAC, ABAC, PBAC).
- Distributed Systems Guru: Proven ability to build systems that handle consensus, replication, and partitioning at cloud scale.
- Cloud Native: Working experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes), SQL (MySQL), and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
- Problem Solver: A track record of "unwinding" complex legacy logic into clean, maintainable abstractions.
- Communication: Ability to communicate technical strategy to senior leadership and collaborate across teams (Inference, Billing, DOKS).
Nice to Have
- Experience with Open Policy Agent (OPA) and Rego.
- Familiarity with Cloud-native deployment strategies (Canary/Blue-Green) via Kubernetes.
Compensation Range:
- $140,800 - $176,000

Align your credentials with cloud infrastructure roles
DigitalOcean's engineering roles emphasize distributed systems, Kubernetes, and cloud-native tooling. Certifications in those areas signal direct fit. Tailor your resume to reflect hands-on infrastructure work, not just application-layer development.
Target teams building developer platform products
DigitalOcean organizes engineering around products like Droplets, Kubernetes, and Managed Databases. Applying to teams aligned with your cloud specialization improves your chances of landing in a group that already has visa sponsorship workflows established.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsored Cloud Software Engineer openings
Filtering for verified sponsors saves time you'd otherwise spend researching individually. Migrate Mate surfaces DigitalOcean roles confirmed for visa sponsorship, so you can focus your applications where they'll actually move forward.
Start OPT applications before your program ends
USCIS recommends filing for OPT up to 90 days before your program end date. If you're targeting DigitalOcean as a first U.S. employer, applying early gives you a realistic start date to offer recruiters without cutting timelines too close.
Clarify H-1B sponsorship directly during recruiter screens
Ask the recruiter whether the role is approved for H-1B sponsorship before investing in technical rounds. DigitalOcean's engineering org has sponsored H-1Bs across software roles, but individual team budgets and headcount timing affect availability.
Understand PERM requirements if you're pursuing a Green Card
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, DOL requires employers to complete PERM labor certification before filing with USCIS. Starting this conversation early in your tenure at DigitalOcean matters because PERM timelines can extend well beyond a year.

Find Cloud Software Engineer at DigitalOcean JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does DigitalOcean sponsor H-1B visas for Cloud Software Engineers?
Yes, DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B visas for Cloud Software Engineer roles. Sponsorship is most commonly initiated after an offer is extended, so the conversation typically happens during the offer stage rather than early in recruiting. Cloud infrastructure and platform engineering roles are among the functions where DigitalOcean has sponsored H-1B petitions. Availability can vary by team and hiring cycle, so confirming sponsorship during your recruiter screen is the most reliable approach.
How do I apply for Cloud Software Engineer jobs at DigitalOcean?
Applications go through DigitalOcean's careers page, where roles are listed by team and product area. If you're looking specifically for positions that offer visa sponsorship, Migrate Mate filters DigitalOcean's open Cloud Software Engineer roles by sponsorship eligibility, which saves significant time. Most roles require a technical screen followed by a system design and coding interview focused on distributed systems and cloud infrastructure.
Which visa types does DigitalOcean commonly sponsor for Cloud Software Engineers?
DigitalOcean sponsors H-1B, TN, and F-1 OPT and CPT for Cloud Software Engineer roles, and supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for eligible employees. F-1 OPT is typically the entry point for recent graduates, with H-1B sponsorship following once employment is established. TN is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying specialty occupations. Permanent residence pathways through PERM are available but require separate employer initiation.
What qualifications does DigitalOcean expect for Cloud Software Engineer roles?
DigitalOcean's Cloud Software Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related technical field. Practical experience with cloud infrastructure, containerization platforms like Kubernetes, and distributed systems is weighted heavily. For H-1B sponsorship purposes, the role must qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards, which a cloud engineering position with a required technical degree generally satisfies.
How does the H-1B sponsorship timeline work when joining DigitalOcean?
If you're on F-1 OPT, DigitalOcean would need to file your H-1B petition during the annual cap registration window in March. USCIS runs a lottery if registrations exceed the 85,000 annual cap, and if selected, the petition is filed for an October 1 start date. F-1 STEM OPT extensions provide up to 24 additional months of work authorization, which can bridge the gap if you don't get selected in your first lottery cycle.
