About the Team
The Security Engineering team at ByteDance builds and operates the core systems that protect one of the world's largest internet platforms and its global user community. We tackle challenges that span threat detection and response (TDR), infrastructure protection, and the emerging frontier of AI and LLM system security — all at the scale of TikTok and ByteDance. Our engineers combine deep systems-building expertise with strong security fundamentals to deliver high-impact, production-grade solutions in a fast-paced, globally distributed environment. If you thrive on ownership, love solving ambiguous problems, and want your work to safeguard products used by billions, this is the team.
- Design and build innovative threat detection, prevention, and response (TDR) systems that protect large-scale platforms, critical infrastructure, and globally distributed endpoints.
- Drive the security of LLM-based systems and AI agent architectures — identifying novel attack surfaces, developing defensive frameworks, and ensuring the safe deployment of AI-powered products at scale.
- Own the end-to-end lifecycle of distributed security systems operating across global regions — from deployment and capacity planning through production reliability, observability, and continuous iteration at scale.
- Partner closely with cross-functional global teams to turn vague problem statements and emerging threat patterns into clear product requirements, and ship high-impact security capabilities on aggressive timelines.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields, with at least 3 years of hands-on software development experience.
- Strong fundamentals in algorithms and data structures; proficiency in Go, Java, or Rust, with the ability to write clean, reliable, and production-ready code.
- Strong back-end development skills, including experience with cloud-native infrastructure, networking, and building services that run reliably at scale.
- Hands-on experience using AI-assisted and agentic development workflows to accelerate engineering velocity and quality, paired with a strong personal standard for building software quickly and well.
- Proven ability to think critically, break down complex or ambiguous problems, and formulate clear, practical solutions in a timely manner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing and implementing threat detection and response (TDR) systems, including detection engineering, automated response pipelines, and integration with modern security architectures.
- Familiarity with security challenges in LLM-based systems or AI agent architectures — such as prompt injection, model abuse, tool-use exploitation, or securing agentic workflows.
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native infrastructure (e.g., Kubernetes, observability stacks), large-scale streaming/batch data pipelines, and building distributed systems that power real-time detection and prevention at scale.
- Experience working in globally distributed teams and driving cross-functional projects end-to-end, from ambiguous problem definition through rollout and iteration.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives, mentor engineers, and influence security direction beyond your immediate team.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Cloud Software Engineer Jobs at ByteDance Jobs
Align your resume to ByteDance's infrastructure stack
ByteDance Cloud roles emphasize large-scale distributed systems, container orchestration, and multi-region reliability. Tailor your resume to reflect hands-on experience with those areas specifically, not generic cloud keywords, before submitting any application.
Target roles explicitly listing visa sponsorship
Not every ByteDance job posting confirms sponsorship availability. Filter for Cloud Software Engineer listings that explicitly state H-1B or visa sponsorship eligibility to avoid late-stage surprises after interviews are already underway.
Use Migrate Mate to track ByteDance's open roles
ByteDance's Cloud Software Engineer openings are posted across multiple channels at different times. Use Migrate Mate to find and monitor verified sponsorship-confirmed roles so you're applying to positions where your visa status won't disqualify you.
Prepare for ByteDance's system design interview format
Cloud Software Engineer candidates at ByteDance consistently report multi-round technical interviews with a heavy system design component. Practicing distributed storage, CDN architecture, and fault-tolerance scenarios directly improves your odds at the offer stage.
Understand how E-3 and H-1B1 change your timeline
ByteDance sponsors E-3 visas for Australian citizens and H-1B1 for Singaporeans and Chileans, both of which avoid the H-1B lottery. If you qualify for either, clarify this with the recruiter early since the petition timeline and USCIS processing path differ from standard H-1B.
Confirm PERM and Green Card sponsorship during offer negotiation
ByteDance sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for Cloud Software Engineers, but timelines vary by country of birth and priority date. Ask explicitly whether your offer letter includes a Green Card sponsorship commitment, and at what stage they initiate the PERM labor certification.

Find Cloud Software Engineer at ByteDance JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does ByteDance sponsor H-1B visas for Cloud Software Engineers?
Yes, ByteDance sponsors H-1B visas for Cloud Software Engineers. The company has an active track record of filing H-1B petitions for technical roles, including cloud infrastructure and distributed systems positions. If you're subject to the H-1B lottery, ByteDance typically initiates the petition process after a formal offer, so confirming sponsorship intent early in the interview process is the right move.
How do I apply for Cloud Software Engineer jobs at ByteDance?
Apply directly through ByteDance's careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which surfaces verified sponsorship-confirmed Cloud Software Engineer openings at ByteDance in one place. The interview process typically involves an initial recruiter screen, multiple technical rounds focused on distributed systems and system design, and a final team fit interview. Having your resume scoped to ByteDance's infrastructure stack before applying improves your chances of passing the initial review.
Which visa types does ByteDance commonly sponsor for Cloud Software Engineers?
ByteDance sponsors H-1B visas for most international Cloud Software Engineers, along with E-3 visas for Australian citizens and H-1B1 visas for nationals of Singapore and Chile. For longer-term pathways, ByteDance also sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for qualifying engineers. If you hold Australian, Singaporean, or Chilean citizenship, raising your visa type with the recruiter early is worthwhile since those paths skip the H-1B lottery entirely.
What qualifications does ByteDance expect for Cloud Software Engineer roles?
ByteDance Cloud Software Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, which also satisfies the specialty occupation requirement USCIS uses to evaluate H-1B eligibility. Practically, ByteDance looks for hands-on experience with distributed systems, container platforms like Kubernetes, and high-availability infrastructure at scale. Candidates with experience in storage systems, service mesh, or multi-cloud environments are particularly competitive for these roles.
How do I handle the timing between a ByteDance offer and my visa status?
If you're on OPT or a STEM OPT extension, you have a defined work authorization window and the H-1B cap-gap rule can bridge the gap if your petition is filed before your OPT expires. For the standard H-1B, USCIS begins accepting petitions on April 1 for an October 1 start date. ByteDance's recruiting cycle means offers are sometimes extended close to that window, so confirming the sponsorship and filing timeline with HR immediately after receiving an offer is essential.
