INTRODUCTION
Imagine what you could do here. At Apple, new ideas have a way of becoming phenomenal products, services, and customer experiences very quickly. Bring passion and dedication to your job and there's no telling what you could accomplish. Apple Pay is transforming the industry in payments, transit and identity, and we're aggressively focusing on the customer's digital wallet experience. Our scale and security demands create unique opportunities for innovative and creative solutions which contribute to millions of customer's daily interactions.
DESCRIPTION
The Wallet, Payments and Commerce (WPC) Cloud Engineering team is looking for an experienced Senior Cloud Engineer to take ownership of complex, ambiguous problems and drive cross-functional solutions that scale with our growth. In this role you'll independently lead significant pieces of our cloud platform, set technical direction on project teams, and raise the bar on quality, security, and customer focus across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Own the design and delivery of platform capabilities end-to-end - from gathering requirements with product and partner teams to running them in production.
- Drive technical direction on multi-quarter initiatives, framing trade-offs and aligning engineering, security, quality, and SRE partners around shared outcomes.
- Architect and evolve our platform-as-a-product offerings, treating internal developers as first-class customers and reducing the friction between idea and production.
- Lead the design and rollout of security-first patterns and policy-as-code controls (Kyverno, OPA) so the platform makes the secure path the easy path.
- Solve complex problems using a mix of open-source and in-house tooling, balancing pragmatism with the long-term health of the platform.
- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code review, design partnership, and targeted coaching on complex assignments.
- Scale existing technologies and introduce new ones to outpace growth projections, and shepherd them from experiment to production-grade adoption.
- Represent the team in cross-organization initiatives, partnering with adjacent platform, security and developer teams to keep our technical strategy cohesive.
- Evangelize next-generation cloud and DevOps practices, building the credibility and shared understanding needed to bring them to fruition across WPC.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- 8+ years of Cloud infrastructure and platform engineering experience, with a track record of owning systems end-to-end in production.
- Experience building platforms and platform-as-a-product. You think about internal developers as customers, and you've shipped paved roads that people actually want to use.
- Kubernetes and Containers. Been there, done that, and now you're the person others come to when the cluster is on fire. You've owned multi-tenant, multi-cluster, multi-region footprints end-to-end.
- Infrastructure as Code, with deep Crossplane and Terraform experience. You've designed composition and provider patterns at scale, not just consumed them. The console is for read-only.
- Security-first architecture with Policy as Code (Kyverno, OPA/Gatekeeper). You bake guardrails into the platform so the secure path is the easy path, and you can defend your trade-offs to security partners.
- Public cloud expertise across AWS, GCP, and/or Azure. You know which services to use, when to use them, and - just as importantly - when not to.
- GitOps and CI/CD with Flux, Jenkins, Kargo. Everything ships through pipelines, promotion is declarative, and rollback is a non-event.
- Strong networking fundamentals (NATs, TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, mTLS). You can debug a cross-region connectivity issue without flinching.
- Linux internals and systems-level troubleshooting. When the symptom is "it's slow sometimes," you know how to find the actual cause.
- Microservices and distributed systems experience. You've designed for failure, not just success.
- Experience with service meshes (Istio, Traefik, LinkerD) and observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Sensu).
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, drive technical direction across a project team, and align solutions with business objectives in ambiguous, cross-functional environments.
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent work experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years of work experience is highly desirable.

Align your credentials to Apple's cloud stack
Apple's cloud engineering roles frequently require distributed systems experience with technologies like Swift, Kubernetes, and large-scale storage. Documenting hands-on project work with these specifically strengthens your case when USCIS evaluates specialty occupation during H-1B adjudication.
Target Apple's infrastructure and platform teams
Within Apple, teams supporting iCloud infrastructure, Apple Intelligence backend services, and developer platform tools are active hiring areas for cloud roles. Identifying the right sub-team before applying improves your chances of landing a role with active headcount.
Use Migrate Mate to find open sponsorship roles
Apple posts Cloud Software Engineer roles across multiple internal teams simultaneously, making it easy to miss positions that actively include visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate filters Apple's open roles by visa type so you apply only to positions where sponsorship is confirmed.
Negotiate your start date around H-1B cap timelines
If you're moving from OPT to H-1B, your employment must begin October 1 following the lottery. Confirm your start date with Apple's recruiting team early so they can file during the March registration window without a gap in your work authorization.
Prepare for Apple's technical interview before discussing visa status
Apple's cloud engineering interview process spans multiple rounds covering system design, distributed systems trade-offs, and coding. Reach the offer stage before raising visa sponsorship details, since sponsorship conversations are handled by recruiting after a verbal offer is extended.
Understand which visa Apple files for your situation
Apple sponsors H-1B, E-3, H-1B1 visa, and TN visas depending on your nationality, along with PERM-based Green Card pathways. Knowing which category applies to you before your offer call lets you ask informed questions about filing timelines and attorney coordination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Apple sponsor H-1B visas for Cloud Software Engineers?
Yes, Apple sponsors H-1B visas for Cloud Software Engineer roles. Apple participates in the annual H-1B cap lottery each March for candidates not already in H-1B status. If you're currently on F-1 OPT, Apple's legal team will coordinate the I-129 petition filing to ensure your work authorization continues without a gap when your OPT expires.
How do I apply for Cloud Software Engineer jobs at Apple?
Applications go through Apple's careers site, but roles move quickly and not all postings specify visa sponsorship. Migrate Mate surfaces Apple's Cloud Software Engineer openings filtered by visa type, so you can focus your time on roles where sponsorship is confirmed before you invest in the interview process.
Which visa types does Apple commonly sponsor for Cloud Software Engineers?
Apple sponsors H-1B and H-1B1 visas for most international cloud engineering hires, along with E-3 visas for Australian citizens and TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. For longer-term pathways, Apple also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Apple expect for Cloud Software Engineer roles?
Apple's cloud engineering roles typically require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Practical experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and large-scale storage matters as much as credentials. USCIS requires the role to qualify as a specialty occupation, and Apple's job postings generally reflect degree requirements that satisfy that standard.
How do I plan my timeline if Apple is sponsoring my visa?
Timeline depends on your current status. F-1 OPT holders need Apple to file an H-1B petition by the April deadline for an October 1 start. E-3 and TN visas can be processed at a consulate with shorter lead times, often within a few weeks of receiving your offer documents from Apple's immigration team.
